Mr Henry A. Wallace came in at 6:30 PM & had dinner with me & after dinner, he came here to my room & left a little before 8 o'c from another appointment. He is son of the late Secy of Agriculture, Henry Cantwell Wallace & brought in his book of records of his ancestral lines from which I am assorting out what pertains to the Finley line from Martha Finley born June 1775, daughter of Clement 1735 1775. He says that George Ross, her grandson, who was a small man in Stature & who died at his son's in Omaha, Neb abt 2 yrs ago aged 84 or 85 yrs told him that the name of his Grandfather who married Martha Finley above was not Reynolds Ross, as he had often been told by his father, but was Randall Ross. H.A. said George Ross's father was President of Bethany College. He said in his several interviews with Geo Ross, first cousin of his grandfather, Rev Henry Wallace & which he always hailed with delight because of his great interest in such matters, he feels

V16 Page 57
that he got all the dates & data that Ross had, but that he gave it to his sister, who is now abroad with their mother & it is locked up there & he can't get it until their return in June at which time he will let me have it. Because, however, of the little concern he gives to collateral lines, I feel I must get the name & address of the son in Omaha & see those records & must now too get the name of the son here in Des Moines who H.S.'s Uncle told me could not give me anything & get his own record if nothing more.

H.A.'s record book is 33 x 23 lines of this book & is entitled:

"Henry Agard Wallace and Ilo Browne Wallace"

Their children, ancestors & collaterals I will now read over the mass of details it contains & put what I can in table form commencing on page 60 & copy other data here as I go along.

V16 Page 58
Jany 19, 1927 10:26 PM at Oak Hill, a letter dated Sept 28, 1926 in answer to mine of June 3, 1926 says among other things that his sister rtd again three weeks ago & he has gone over her records, but does not believe she has anything more than I have. He says however that there were three brothers by the name of Ross who came to this country from the North of Ireland during the 18th century viz: William who went to Kentucky, Thomas who went to Ohio, & Randall who settled for a time in Eastern Penna & later in Western Penna.

This Randall Ross, who was the grandfather of my grandfather Henry Wallace (I omitted to say the this letter is from Henry Agard Wallace of Des Moines, Iowa) married Martha Finley (see page 60). My grandfather in his autobiography published under the name of "Uncle Henrys own Story" (see if can get a copy) on page 124 & 25 some recollections of his gf Randall Ross & his wife. Both from what my gf says & from what George Ross, another grandson of Randall Ross told me a number of years ago, I would judge that the Finleys were rather lively people. Geo Ross used to tell me that the Finleys were rather small & lively & dark while the Ross's were larger & fairer & slower going.

V16 Page 59
He says he understands that Hanna's "Ohio Valley Genealogies" on page 36 (which see) gives correctly the names of the children of Randall Ross together with the dates of their birth.

He says the only ones of the Ross family he knows now are grandchildren of Andrew Finley Ross who was born June 4, 1813 the father of George Ross. He says he was one of the youngest children of Randall Ross, was a Prof of Latin & Greek & believed he was at one time Pres of a small college at Oskaloosa, Iowa & was also Pres of Bethany College, WVA. He says one of his grandchildren lives in Des Moines & one in Omaha, Neb. See Page 65 where Miss Josephine M. Wallace said Will C. Ross moved from Omaha, Neb to Round Up Montana. I wrote him there & have an answer but have not come to it yet.

At residence of Miss Josephine Martha Wallace No 1808 Ingersoll St Des Moines, Iowa Feby 28, 1926 about 3 PM

I came out on a street car & find Mrs Wallace very kind & distinguished looking. She had a big bible printed at Phila, Pa in 1860 by Wm Wm Harding in which her father, Rev Henry Wallace had written the dates of birth & death of his 7 bros & sisters & his won & sister Margaret Ann's marriage & which I entered in the table on page 60.

She says the name of the son of George Ross in Omaha, Neb & the one who got his papers is Will C. Ross who is now living at Roundup, Montana where he recently moved to. His father died at his house on Feby 22, 1924 & Will C. got his father's records.

John A. Ross, another son of Geo Ross is married & has two children. He is the youngest in the family. She said Miss Helen Lee at the Hist Society can give valuable information. Mrs Wallace thinks her mother had some Finley relatives.

Sheriff's office Des Moines, Iowa Mch 1, 1926 11 AM

The Sheriff, Dr Park Alphonso Findley, is a short smooth faced, medium build of a man, with a strong determined face & an active hustling man. He says he spoke to his mother about me & she says to see Mrs Kate Arnold, Leon, Iowa 70 miles south of here as she has a lot of family records. He says she is a cousin of his father, John Bang Finley & a daughter of Dr Samuel Finley of Leon, Iowa & that her brother, Frank Finley now dead, had a daughter, Helen, Mrs Daley, also dead, who gathered a lot of records of the family. The sheriff's mother, Mrs John Bangs Finley lives at No 1025 W 22d St here where the telephone Drake 6099 W is in the name of her daughter Ricka Findley. He says his grandfather, Wm McKendree Finley, was raised down among the Osage or Wyandotte Indians Mission by his Uncle, Rev James B. Finley. Asking about the change of the spelling of the name, he said he remembers the sign over his father's office was "Finley", but when a boy, he commenced using

a "d". He says the old bible records of his grandfather are boxed up at his mother's but he will see her this afternoon or evening & get them out & copy the record for me & give it to me if I will call at his office at 9 o'c in the morning. He gave me his own record as follows:

Park Alphonso Finley born Jany 28, 1875 at Bloomfield, Iowa married Aug 2, 1909 to Miss Laura Wilson born Sept 16, 1888 at Bloomfield, Iowa, daughter of Homer Davis & his wife Kate A. Johnson who was adopted by Charles Wilson. No issue. Telephone book gives his residence as 1204 46th St Tel Drake 5516. He is a Republican & was elected Shff in Nov 1922 & took charge Jany 2, 1923 for two yrs & was re elected for another two year term in Nov 1924. I then went to the floor above to the Recorder's office & they were very unsatisfactory about information about their records, but said they would see what they could find about wills of George or Eliza Bailey & Jesse Fulton & let me know if I wd call tomorrow morning. PM

Have called six Baileys & cannot get trace of any descendants of Geo Bailey & Eliza Gaddis descendants. Mrs Wm Bailey 725 Arthur St, Tel Walnut 4143 W says her husband's mother was a Jeffery & his people came here from Franklin, Indiana. Have also called several Fultons, but without getting any trace of Jesse's descendants.

There are other Caruthers, Finleys, Jacks & Kilgores here but no Redburns or Rothermels, but my urgency to get on does not permit of my looking them up now.

At 4 PM, I went to the "Wallace Farmer" office & saw H.A. Wallace again & gave him back his record book. He gave me the dates of birth & parentage of Newton B. Ashby & Virginia Stubbs & present addresses of Angus D. MacLay & John B. Wallace, all of which I have entered in place in the table at Pages 61 & 62. I bade him goodbye at 4:22 Pm & walked around 2 1/2 blocks to the Capital City Commercial College where a host of girls were coming out & saw again Ira H. Carothers V.Pt of the college who had given me his record in Oct, 1922. He is clerk of the Session of Rev Robt W. Thompson's U.P.

I bade Mr C. goodbye & coming to the hotel phoned Mr Rankin, but he had stepped out. Mr C. says he is much interested in getting the family records. I have phoned his office again just now 5:30 PM & they say he lives at 2838 Brattleboro, Ave where the telephone, Drake 5734 W is listed in name of C.E. Rankin, probably his father. They say he has a party on for tonight & I will phone him there 4:40 PM

I have just phoned the residence, but Russell wasn't there, but I talked to his father, C.E. Rankin who says his mother was a sister of John Carothers, father of Ira H. & had seven children names of which etc he can give, but cannot give dates. He says his Rankins are from Indiana. If Russell comes in, he will have him call me here. Rev S.A.
