2.6.3 Database Users and administrator
The main purpose of a database system is to retrieve information from and store information in the database. People that deal with database are called database users or database administrators.



      1. Database Users and Users Interface

There are four categories of database system users and each class uses a different interface.
1. Naïve users
2. Application programs
3. Sophisticated users
4. Specialized users
1. Naïve users: - This category of users interacts with the system by calling a program that has been written previously. E.g. a user wishes to access his account balance over the net may come across some forms, which are used to enter the account number, an application program at the web server retrieves and passes the information back to the user. Users may also read report generated from the database. The interface here is the form interface which the user fills.
. 2. Application Programs: - These users are responsible for writing application programs and develop the user interface by choosing from many tools. For example, the RAD (Rapid Application Development) which allows the programmer to design forms, reports without writing a program and make use of some programming languages to design form and display of data on screen.

3. Sophisticated Users: - These categories of users interact with the system without writing programs.


4. Specialized Users: - Are also sophisticated users that are involved in writing specialized database application e.g. computer aided design.


2.6.5 Database Administrator (DBA)
Is a computer professional who is responsible for the creation and managing the organizational database.
Responsibilities of (DBA):
1. Deciding the contents of the database.
2. Deciding the storage structure and access strategies.
3. Defining strategies for back up and recovery.
4. Monitoring performance.
5. Interacting with users and also regulates which part of the database can be accessed by various users.
