At Dundee the Fifth of October 1960 At the Annual General Meeting of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Queen’s Hotel Dundee at 6.30 p.m. Present: Deacon Ralph Pride, Boxmaster Dr George H Smith, Mr Frank Hay, Clerk, and Fifth three Members of the Craft Deacon Ralph Pride in the Chair Apologies for absence were intimated from Ex-Convener A S Drummond Ex-Convener H J Carlton, Arthur A Miller and W R R Bruce
The following minutes were read and approved: (a) Annual General Meeting – 13th October 1959 (b) Special General Meeting - -13th October 1959 (c) –do- -1st April 1960
The Boxmaster’s Cash Account for the year ended 15th September 1960 was submitted. The Clerk reported that the Accounts showed a loss of £28. 6.10d compared with a profit last year of £21/-. The Clerk explained the reason for the loss this year. The Deacon then read the Report which had been prepared and which showed that over the last 18 years there had been an average loss of £28 incurred each year. The Deacon stated that the Entrance Fees had not been increased since at least 1880. After discussion it was left to the Committee to look into the whole position of the finances of the Craft and they were given full powers to increase the Entrance Fees or to take any other steps to put the Craft on a proper financial footing. The Accounts were approved on the motion of Ex-Deacon George F Brown and seconded by Mr Alex Lemon. III. Election of Office Bearers (a) Deacon. On the motion of Convener R S May Deacon Ralph Pride was unanimously re-elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. (b) Boxmaster On the motion of the Deacon Dr George H Smith was unanimously re-elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. (c) Committee It was intimated that Mr Andrew Swan, Mr John Johnston Jr and Mr J Greig Sibbald were due to retire and were not eligible for re-election. The following Members were elected to the Committee and to hold office for two years namely: Mr Alex Lemon, Mr John Anderson and Mr A C McNab. (d) Clerk Mr Frank Hay was unanimously re-elected as Clerk to the Craft. Mr Hay in accepting office thanked the Members for their continued confidence but stated that he was considering resigning from the Office of the Clerk but would continue for at least one year or until a new Clerk was appointed.
He Deacon intimated that the Kirking of the Trades would be held in St Andrew’s Church on Sunday first 9th October and invited as many of the Members of the Craft to attend as possible. This being all the business the Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman Ralph Pride Chairman

Deacon Ralph Pride proposed and Boxmaster Dr George H Smith seconded the following gentlemen for admission to the Craft namely: Alexander K Tulloch Ophthalmic Surgeon 20 Jedburgh Road Dundee proposed by the Boxmaster. James Hamilton Surveyor 53 Mains Loan Dundee Gerald Alexander Burnett Chartered Surveyor 5 Duntrune Terrace West Ferry Lewis Maurice Hill Jute Merchant & Manufacturer Rocknowe Reres Road Broughty Ferry Alexander Dickson Williams Solicitor 64 Seafield Road Broughty Ferry William Stephen Robertson Chartered Accountant 10 Grove Road West Ferry Alexander K Tulloch Ophthalmic Surgeon 20 Jedburgh Road Dundee Andrew Dickson Williams Solicitor 58 Sea field Road Broughty Ferry. These gentlemen having severally emitted the customary declaration were accordingly admitted Members with all the rights, privileges and immunities appertaining to Membership conform to Minute of Admission in the Lockit Book. The Clerk was instructed to have Certificates of Membership issued on payment of entry money and dues. Ralph Pride Chairman
At a Meeting of the Committee of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Office of the Clerk at 148 Nethergate Dundee at 5.15 p.m. Deacon Ralph Pride, Boxmaster Dr. George H. Smith, Convener Robert S May, Messrs. Kenneth W Pritchard, Alan C Lemon, John Anderson, A C McNab and Mr. Frank Hay Clerk An apology for absence was intimated from Lovat Grant The Boxmaster welcomed the new Members of Committee. I. The Minute of Meeting held on 23rd September 1960 was read and approved. Convener May reported that he had been advised by the Clerk of the Nine Incorporated Trade to retire from the Membership of the Committee of the Craft. Arrangements for Annual Dinner The Deacon reported that the Toast List was now completed and was as follows: “The City and Trade of Dundee” would be proposed by Sir Beresford Craddock MP and the Reply by Lord Provost McManus “The Nine Incorporated Trades” would be proposed by the Very Reverend R F V Scott DD and the reply by Convener R S May, “The Clergy” by Provost John R Pate JP Provost of Carnoustie and the Reply by the Rev T R S Campbell BD. Specimen Toast Lists were submitted which the Clerk received from the Invercarse Hotel. The Clerk contacted Mr Lane by telephone and was informed that if he engaged a three piece Orchestra the charge would be £7.10/- and that there would be a service charge of £5 in addition to the Charge for the Dinner. After full discussion it was decided that the Menu number one accepted for 21/- should be accepted and that the Invercarse Orchestra hold also be engaged. It was arranged that the Tickets should be £1.10/- with no Sherry served prior to the Dinner. A Sub-Committee was appointed consisting of the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to make the final arrangements.
The Clerk submitted the Statement of Receipts and Payments of the Initiation Supper which showed that there was a surplus of £3. 3/-. The Statement was approved. Mr may at this stage asked to be excused. The next business was the remit with powers given to the Committee at the Annual General meeting to discuss the whole finances of the Craft. In view of the fact that the Membership Fees had not been increased since at east 1880 it was decided that the Fees should be increased as follows: For Free Members £5. 5. 0 Unfree Members £10.10. 0 Privilege Members £10.10. 0 Non Privileged Members £16.16. 0 Mr Anderson proposed that in addition to this a levy should be made on each Member of £1. 1/-. After a full discussion it was decided to agree to Mr Anderson’s proposal. It was left to the Deacon and the Clerk to draw up the necessary Circular which should be sent to the Members after the Annual Dinner. The Deacon and Boxmaster signed the List of Poor. The Minute of Meeting held on the Nineteenth October Nineteen hundred and sixty one was read and approved. II. Draft Circular proposed to be sent to members was then submitted and after full discussion certain amendments were made to the Circular and the Clerk was instructed to have it sent out as early as possible to the Members. III. Arrangements for Making to be held on fifteenth March Nineteen Hundred and sixth one The Clerk reported that he had booked the Queen’s Hotel as formerly and it was decided that the Toast List should be “The City and Trade of Dundee”“, The Nine Incorporated Trades” and “The New Members”. Certain names were suggested as likely speakers and the Deacon undertook to contact in the instance Mr Nelson Carne to ascertain if he would propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee”. IV. Gordon James Robbie Solicitor 60 Seafield Road Broughty Ferry Dundee – proposed by Boxmaster George H Smith Robert Glyn Thomas SAMC Eastern Royal Hospital Board 95 Seafield road Broughty Ferry - proposed by Duncan W h McKerchar Mr Alistair Hugh Mill and Mr Ralph William Recordon who were unable to be admitted at the last Meeting would also come forward at this Meeting. the Committee authorised the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to approve of any other Applications provided the forms were received by the fifteenth current. The Statements of Receipts and Payments of the Initiation Meeting held on 16th March which showed a surplus of £4.15. 9 was submitted and approved. The Clerk submitted a Statement of the Special Appeal and the total sum subscribed amounted to £78 which represented from 89 Members. it was decided that Mr R Lee Chalmers should be instructed to make a suitable investment for this sum and that he also should be asked to advise on the existing investments held by the Craft. The Clerk was instructed to delay instructing the purchase of any investment for a little time to allow any additional Members to contribute to the Fund. II Annual General Meeting and Making It was decided to hold the Annual General Meeting and Making in the queen’s Hotel on Wednesday 27th September 1961. It was decided that the Toast List should be arranged at a later Meeting. III. Annual Dinner The Clerk reported that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 29th November 1961. It was decided that the Toasts should be: “Her Majesty’s Forces” “The City and Trade of Dundee” “The Nine Incorporated Trades” Deacon Pride undertook to contact Lord Ritchie of Dundee to ascertain if he would be available to propose the Toast of the City and Trade of Dundee. The Boxmaster undertook to approach suitable persons to propose the Toast “The Nine Incorporated Trades” and “Her Majesty’s Forces”. The Minute of Meeting held on 20th April was read and approved. The Clerk submitted a final Statement pf the sums collected for the Special Appeal which now amounted to £200. 4/-. The Committee considered that in view of the large sums contributed by a few of the Members that this Appeal was not as satisfactory as was expected. It was decided to make reference to the Appeal at the Annual General Meeting and that the sum should not be invested until after the Annual General Meeting. II. Arrangements re Annual General Meeting The arrangements for the Toast List of he Annual General Meeting were hen discussed and the Toasts were: The Nine Incorporated Trades The Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk The New Members The Boxmaster undertook to contact Mr Louis M Hill to propose the Toast of the Nine Incorporated Trades and the Deacon was to approach Ex-Deacon J A Davidson to propose the Toast of The Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk. The Vote of Thanks at the Making would be proposed by Mr Lovat Grant. Authority was given to the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk to pass and approve of any Applications for Membership.
Arrangements regarding the Annual Dinner were hen discussed and the Deacon reported that Lord Ritchie of Dundee was to propose The City and Trade if Dundee and the Boxmaster undertook to approach Professor Hill to propose the toast of The Nine Incorporated Trades. It was suggested that Chief Constable John Orr should be asked to propose the Toast of The Clergy. Mr Findlay suggested that the Accounts should be closed as soon as possible so that the Abstract should be prepared and sent out to the Members.
