At Dundee the Twenty seventh day of September 1961

At the Annual General Meeting of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Queen’s Hotel Dundee at 6.45 p.m.

The Deacon welcomed the Members and pointed out that he numbers attending were slightly don from last year.
I Minutes.
The following Minutes were read and approved:

(a) Annual General Meeting – 5th October 1960

(b) Special General Meeting – 5th October 1960

(c) –do- 15th March 1961

The Clerk reported that Committee Meetings were held on 19th October 1960, 5th February 1961, 20th April 1961 and 31st August 1961.
II. Accounts

The Boxmaster’s Cash Account for the year ended 15th September 1961 was approved on the Motion by Lord Dean of Guild A S Drummond and seconded by x-Deacon J A Davidson. The Deacon reported that in connection with the Special Appeal a total sum of £202. 6/- as shown in the Accounts had been received and a further donation of £2. 5/- had been received since the close of the Accounts making a total of £204.11/-. Eighty nine Members contributed the sum of £117 and ten Members contributed the balance of £87.11/-. The Deacon stated that in view of the fact that the Membership was 316 he was slightly disappointed with the result of the appeal and he intimated that any Member who had forgotten the Appeal their donations would still be welcome.


III. Election of Office Bearers

(a). Deacon.

On the motion of Deacon Ralph Pride Boxmaster Dr George H Smith was unanimously elected Deacon for the ensuing year. The new Deacon expressed his hanks to the Members of the Craft for the honour they had paid him in appointing him Deacon and assured the Members that it would be his endeavour to serve the Craft to he best of his ability.

The also paid tribute to the service rendered to the Craft by Ex-Deacon Ralph Pride.

The Presentation of an Ex-Deacons Badge to Mr Pride was made by he new Deacon. Mr Pride stated how much he had enjoyed the honour of acting as Deacon of the Bonnetmaker Craft for the past two years and thanked the Boxmaster and Members of Committee for their co-operation and assistance.
(b) Boxmaster

On the motion of the Deacon Mr David S Moyes was unanimously elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. In accepting office Mr Moyes thanked the Members of the Craft for the honour they had paid him in appointing him to this high office.

(c) Committee

It was intimated that Messers W A Findlay, Ian P Murray, Lovat grant and Kenneth W Pritchard retired and were not eligible for re-election. The following Members were elected to the Committee to hold office for two years namely: Dr O Taylor Brown. Mr D W H McKerchar. Mr William K Black and Mr J W Mort.

(d). Clerk

Mr Frank Hay was unanimously re-elected as Clerk to the Craft.


IV. Annual Dinner

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 29th November 1961.


V. Any other Competent Business
The Deacon intimated that the Kirking of the Trades would be held in ‘St Andrew’s Church on Sunday 8th October 1961 and requested that as many Members of the Craft should attend as possible.

The Meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman

At a Special General Meeting of the Bonnetmaker Craft of Dundee held within the Queen’s Hotel Dundee at 7 p.m.

Present:

Also attending Thirty nine Members of the Craft and Mr Frank Hay, Clerk
Deacon Dr George H Smith proposed and Boxmaster seconded the following gentlemen for admission to the Craft namely:

David Cruickshank Solicitor 10 Whitehall Street Dundee and

Robert Tyrie Ritchie Consultant Physician 33 Collingwood Crescent Barnhill.

These gentlemen having severally emitted the customary declaration were accordingly admitted Members with all the rights, privileges and immunities appertaining to Membership conform to Minute of Admission in the Lockit Book. The Clerk was instructed to have Certificates of Membership issued on payment of entry money and dues.

I Minutes

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 31st August 1961 was read and approved.

The Statement of the Supper at the Initiation Meeting on 27th September 1961 was submitted and showed a surplus of £2. 0. 9. The Statement was approved.

The Committee expressed the opinion that the Meal provided by the Queen’s Hotel on that occasion was not satisfactory.


II. Arrangements for Annual Dinner

The Clerk submitted special Menus received from Invercarse Hotel and after discussion it was agreed to accept the Menu at 21/-d per head.

It was also agreed to book the Invercarse Hotel Orchestra for that evening. The Tickets would be the same price as last year namely 30/-.

The Toast List was then gone over and approved.


Special Appeal

The final statement of the Special Appeal was submitted and it was agreed to consult Mr Chalmers Stockbroker as to the suitable Investment of the sum in hand amounting to £204.11. 0. The Clerk was also instructed to consult Mr Chalmers on the remaining investments held by the Clerk.


Pensions

The List of Pensioners was gone over and the Boxmaster and the Clerk were authorised to sign the List of Applicants.

1. Minutes

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 19th October 1961 was read and approved.


2. Annual Dinner

The Committee submitted their returns of Tickets for the Annual Dinner. It was arranged that the Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk would meet in the Clerk’s Office on Monday at 5 p.m. to assist in making the Table Arrangements. Dr O Taylor Brown undertook to meet Lord Ritchie at the Royal Hotel and to convey him to the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday evening. On Wednesday afternoon the Deacon, Mr Black and Mr Mort were to meet and assist the Clerk on finally allocating the Tables.


3. Nine Incorporated Trades

The Clerk produced a letter from Edward R Simpson Nine Incorporated Trades regarding the fixing of plaques in St Andrew’s Parish Church. After a full discussion it was decided to donate £20 to the above Fund and that the Members of the Craft should be given an opportunity to contribute to the above Fund at the first Meeting of the Craft.


4. Investment of Funds

A letter from Messers Chalmers & Co Stockbrokers was read to the Committee suggesting a suitable investment for the amount collected from the Special Appeal and it was decided to invest this sum in the purchase of 3% Savings Bonds 1960/70 as recommended by he Stockbrokers.


5. Suggested Admission of the Duke of Kent to the Craft

The Deacon reported that Mr May Convener of the Nine Incorporated Trades had suggested that the Duke of Kent should be asked to become a Member of the Craft and that his Initiation should coincide with The Biennial Dinner of the Nine Incorporated Trades. It was unanimously agreed that if the Duke of Kent was to be asked to become a Bonnetmaker that all correspondence should be dealt with by the Deacon and the Clerk and that if he should consent to become a Bonnetmaker he should be made immediately prior to the Annual Dinner. It was left to the Deacon to report this to Convener May.


6. March Making

A discussion followed regarding the holding of the next Initiation Meeting and although the members expressed dissatisfaction at the quality of the meal served at the last Meeting it was decided if possible to hold this Meeting in the Queen’s Hotel anytime during the first three weeks in March. If the Queen’s Hotel was not available it was left to the Clerk to arrange with the Royal Hotel.

I. Minutes

The Minute of Meeting of the Committee held on 24th November 1961 was read and approved.


II. Applications for Membership

An Application from Mr Chessor L Matthew Head of the School of Architecture 36 Albany Road West Ferry, proposed by Mr James A Davidson was submitted and approved. It was hoped that there would be further Applications for Membership submitted and the Committee were asked to lodge Applications within a week. The Deacon, Boxmaster and Clerk were authorised to approve of the Applications.


III. Making

Re: Making to be held on 9th March 1962 it was proposed that Mr David H Shepherd should be asked to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” and that the Lord Provost should be asked to reply. Mr J W Mort undertook to propose the Toast of “The Nine Incorporated Trades” which would be replied to by the Convener. The Toast to the New Members would as usual be in the hands of the Boxmaster. Mr D W H MeKerchar undertook to propose the Vote of Thanks.

A discussion followed regarding he Menu and the Clerk was authorised to arrange for a suitable Menu with the Queen’s Hotel and if necessary to increase the price of the Tickets to 17/6d.
iV Annual Dinner 1961

The Statement of Receipts and Payments of the Annual Dinner held on 29th November 1961 was submitted and showed a surplus of £32. 1. 9 which was considered to be most satisfactory.

Arising out of the minutes the Deacon stated that Convener May had suggested that he should attend a Meeting of the Craft to discuss the invitation to be sent to the Duke of York to become a Bonnetmaker. After full discussion it was considered that no point would be served by Convener May attending a Meeting of the Committee and that Mr May should be requested to return the correspondence he had had with the Duke of Kent. It was decided that if at all possible the Duke of Kent should be asked to propose the toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” at the Annual Dinner of that day was suitable to him. it was suggested that the Annual Dinner of 1962 should be held on 28th November and if the Duke of Kent was not available the Duke of Atholl might be asked to propose the Toast of “The City and Trade of Dundee” on that occasion. Sir John Ure Primrose was also mentioned as a likely speaker.
V. Report on Investments made by Stockbrokers.

The Clerk reported that as recommended by Messers Chalmers & Co Stockbrokers the proceeds of Special Fund had been invested in the purchase of 3% Savings Bonds 1960/70. The Clerk also reported that Mr Chalmers had purchased on behalf of the Craft the sum of £14.11. 3d of 3% British Transport. Mr Chalmers had gifted this amount of Stock to boring the Craft’s holding to a round figure.

II. March Making

The Clerk submitted a Statements of Receipts and Payments which was approved.


III Correspondence with H R H The Duke of Kent

The Clerk submitted correspondence which Convener May had with H R H the Duke of Kent and it was decided that the Deacon and the Clerk should write to His Royal Highness requesting to know if he is now free to accept the invitation to become an Honorary Member of the Craft. it was suggested that we might mention in the letter that the Annual Dinner of the Craft was to take place on 28th November and if that date was suitable it was suggested that His Royal Highness could be made either in the early afternoon oor sometine before the Dinner. The Clerk stated that if he Making and the Annual Dinner was to be held on the same day it was not possible for him and his Staff to undertake both functions and the Committee undertook to relieve the Clerk of part of the duties on these occasions.


IV Annual Dinner

It was decided that no arrangements regarding Speakers should be made for the Annual Dinner until a reply is received form H R H The Duke if Kent.


V Dedication of Plaques in St Andrew’s Church

The Deacon referred to the Plaques which were to be erected in St Andrew’s Church and also in regard to the Dedication Service. It was decided that so soon as the date of the Service is known all Members should be circulated as the Reverend T R S Campbell is very anxious that a large turn-out of the Members of the Craft should be present on that occasion.

I. Minutes

The Minute of Meeting held on 5th April 1962 was read and approved. The Clerk read a letter from the Private Secretary , H r h The Duke of Kent stating that His Royal Highness would be unable owing to commitments to become a Member of the Bonnetmaker Craft at least this year.


II. Annual General Meeting and Making

It was imitated that the date of the Annual General Meeting had been provisionally changed from 5th October to the 11th October. The Boxmaster stated that the 11th of October did not suit him and it was decided that the Annual General Meeting should be held on 24th October. The Toast List was then discussed and the Deacon undertook to contact Dr R Glyn Thomas to ascertain if he would propose the Toast of The City and Trade of Dundee. It was suggested that the Nine Incorporated Trades should be proposed by Mr A Dickson Williams Solicitor. The vote of Thanks was to be undertaken by W R Black.


III Annual Dinner 28th November 1962

The Deacon intimated that the Right Honourable The Duke of Atholl had consented to propose the Toast of The City and Trade of Dundee and that Lord Hughes was to propose the Toast of The Nine Incorporated Trades. It was suggested that the Toast to the Guests should be proposed by Ex-Deacon Ralph Pride whom failing Ex-Convener Douglas F Hardie and for the Reply the Commander of the Air Base at Edzell should be asked to undertake this Toast. It was also suggested that Mr John Anderson should propose the Vote of Thanks.

In regard to the resignation of Mr J W Mort it was decided not to fill the vacancy until the Annual General Meeting.

IV. Arrangements for Annual General Meeting and Making

The Clerk submitted a specimen Menu from the Queen’s Hotel and it was decided to accept this Menu but it was suggested that Chicken might be substituted for Duckling.

In connection with the Toast List the Deacon reported that Dr R T Ritchie had consented to propose the Toast of The City and Trade of Dundee and that Lord Provost Maurice McManus would reply. The Deacon reported that so far he had been unsuccessful in obtaining anyone to propose the Toast of The Nine Incorporated Trades and it was suggested that Chessor L Matthew hold be asked to propose this Toast. Mr Pride undertook to telephone Mr Matthew and reported thereafter that Mr Matthew was agreeable to propose his toast.
V. Annual Dinner

The Deacon reputed that Lord Provost Maurice McManus would be in America at the date of the Annual Dinner and would be unable to reply to the Toast of The City and Trade of Dundee but that the Chief Magistrate would attend in his place. The Clerk was instructed to communicate with the Lord Provost.

In connection with the Toast to our Guests the Deacon stated tat Mr Pride felt that he could not undertake this duty and that he had arranged for Ex-Convener A S Drummond to propose this Toast. It was reported that we were still awaiting a reply from the Commander of the Air Base at Edzell who had been asked to reply to this Toast.

The Meeting closed with a Vote of Thanks to the Chairman.

The Deacon then proposed that David S Moyes be re-elected Boxmaster for the ensuing year. This was unanimously agreed to.

(b) Committee.

It was intimated that John Anderson, A C McNab, Alan C Lemon and J H Mort retired and were not eligible for re-election. The following Members were elected to the Committee to hold office for two years namely:

Mr Louis H Hill, Mr John Conacher, Mr Leslie F Mitchell and Alastair H Hill.

(c) Mr Frank Hay was unanimously re-elected as Clerk to the Craft.


IV Annual Dinner

The Deacon intimated that the Annual Dinner would be held in the Invercarse Hotel on Wednesday 28th November 1962.

The Meeting closed with a Vote of Thanks to the Chairman.
