Suppressed Information" (1904) with "less essential portions" omitted. This was a Socialist tract on labor conditions & history in the U. S. The second section, "Warren's Federal Court Speech (pp 49-63), prints his speech before the Federal Court at Fort Scott, Kansas, July 1, 1909, between conviction & sentencing. Warren was Managing Editor of Appeal to Reason Press, Girard, Kan. After Messrs Haywood, Moyer, & Pettibone (accused of being socialists & workers) of the Western Federation of Miners - were accused of the murder of the ex-gov of Idaho - they were secretly removed from Colorado back to Idaho without formal extradition. The U.S. Supreme Court afterwards ruled that the Constitution & laws of the U.S. had not been violated. Warren therefore suggested that the conclusion one must draw from this decision was that it must be legal to kidnap people. He further suggested, to drive his point home, that ex-Gov Taylor of Kentucky, indicted for murder but living in Indiana, be kidnapped & returned to Kentucky for trial: "Will the Supreme Court of the United States hold this same opinion (i.e, no kidnapping laws have been violated) if the defendant is a Republican and a capitalist?" Warren suggested in a postal mailing this test action might be taken, & offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who would do so. He was then indicted in 1907 for abuse of the mails, and was tried in 1909 by an all-Republican jury. Socialist editor, Eugene V. Debs, published a defense of Warren & details of the case in his paper, "The Appeal to Reason" (Girard, May 22). After Warren was convicted, Pres. Taft, not wanting Warren to become a martyr for the socialist cause, commuted his sentence to a $100 fine (the fine was to be paid "by civil process only" so that Warren couldn't refuse it.). Good condition in spite of detached front cover archivally re-attached. Rare. (#1209167) $283.64
