Binding & covers in good plus condition. Some floppiness to the front hinge, but it is unbroken & uncracked. Moderate wear to extremities. The dj is dreadful. It looks like a small herd of Montana cattle was driven over it. Large piece at bottom corner of front panel torn off. Various chips, small holes, creases and abuse elsewhere. Now for the association. This copy is from the personal library of famed Texas historian Walter Prescott Webb. His custom-printed bookplate is on the upper outside corner of the front paste down. Please note that Prof. Webb, himself, did not sign this copy. It is signed, however, by Terrell Webb, Walter's wife. Terrell Webb was the former Terrell Maverick, the widow of Congressman Maury Maverick. She married Webb in 1961. Returning with him from a book signing in San Antonio in 1963, she was badly injured in the auto accident which killed Walter. The book signing was of the publication of the journals of Terrell's aunt. There is also a 1965 fos on the ffep; it is either "Maverick" or "Warwick" or something close. Now for the really great association of this copy. Two T.L.S. (Typed Letter Signed) full letter sheets are tipped along their top edge to the half-title. This is an April 7, 1956, letter written -- on his custom printed letterhead -- by author Mark H. Brown to Professor Webb. The content of the letter is bibliographically interesting & important. Brown asks Webb to provide a comment, in advance, for Brown & Felton's next book (untitled in the letter, but which was issued in 1956 as Before Barbed Wire). As we know, Webb did indeed agree to do so, & his lengthy praise is on the dust jacket of that volume. In this letter Brown comments on several things: He explains that the two volumes were divided from a one volume manuscript. He confesses his realization that Webb would be "crawling out on a limb" to "endorse" something he had "never seen". He reviews the original consideration by the publisher to print the (eventual) two volumes as one book. The letter references & comments on 3 cattlemen & cowboys who read the "cowboy material" of the books. He also comments on & references the 2 sheep men who read the sheep material. He offers reassurance that the second volume will be as good, as if not better, than the first because in it would be including the "cream of the Huffman collection". There is a reference to Will Rodgers (sic) Jr. featuring The Frontier Years on a TV show. There is a handwritten margin comment where Brown says that he was also approaching J. Evetts Haley, Ross Santee, & Paul Wellman for their advance comments. Also laid into this book are 1) "Old West Photo Gallery - The Huffman Pictures" advertising card. 2) A card from the publisher requesting a review of The Frontier Years, with the title, authors, pre-pub & pub prices, & date typed on it. 3) A 4pp full size (8 1/2" x 11") sales folder from Coffrin's Old West Gallery, specifically the L. A. Huffman collection, with b/w illustrations. A price list comprises 3pp of the folder. There is some red ink pen underlining on the folder. It is initialed in pencil & dated 6/15/78 by the person with the 1965 fos on the ffep. There are occasional pencil marks in the book, but I do not know in whose hand they are in. This copy is perhaps the supreme association copy of this book. Herd 347, 6-guns 301 (#0909028) $607.50

428. Buhs, Joshua Blu. BIGFOOT: The Life and Times of a Legend. Chicago: Univ of Chicago, 2009. Book. Cloth. 279pp. Illus. Bibliography. Index. Dramatis Personae. An intriguing & very well written book. Buhs doesn't quite believe that Sasquatch exists, but argues strongly for the existence & importance of the legend. He describes the relationship & dynamics of the well-known people around Sasquatchiana (hunters, researchers, etc.). Includes an interesting chapter on the history of the hunt for the Yeti. Book published too soon to consider the most recent & fascinating research by professional researchers & scientists who are much more qualified than Buhs to actually investigate & study the subject. So, buy this for the history of the search, not for the accuracy of the author's belief. Fine in dj. (#1011019) $24.31
