BOOKWAYS A Quarterly for the Book Arts. Austin, 1991-1995., 1991. First Edition. Book. All 1st editions. Beautiful 4to printed & decorated wraps. Approx 50pp - 80pp each issue. Illust. A complete run (Issues 1 - 16, but numbered in fourteen volumes) of a short-lived, but terrific periodical devoted to modern fine printing, particularly in the U.S. Expensively published by W. Thomas Taylor, these quarterlies included numerous essays on the history & evolution of fine printing with much discussion on the future of books & fine printing in the computer age. Announcements, ads, etc., all of high design quality. Each issue was printed by letterpress, & later on digital letterpress, on Mohawk Superfine paper. Prospectus letter laid in, as well as a letter of announcement of the end of the publication. Lippincott, 1882. Book. Bibliographers only cite the 1881 first edition (copyright 1880), & do not mention this 1882 printing, which collates & sizes identical to the 1881 printing. Attractive pictorial gilt & blind-stamped small 8vo cloth. 222pp. Illustrated with several wood engravings. Index. 6pp of additional publications. Bibliographer Reese writes, in part, "Brisbin's book has long been considered the most important promotional work adding fuel to the cattle boom of the 1880s... (note of Brisbin's plagiarism) ...Whether the facts were his or not, Brisbin paints a spectacular picture in which his favorite phrase is 'and the profits are enormous.'" Information out of Nebraska, Texas, Colorado, etc.. According to Reese, at the 1st National Convention of Cattlemen in 1884 in St. Louis, Brisbin was elected vice president of the Nat'l Cattle and Horse Growers' Assoc.. Moderate wear to extremities. Medium-sized (9 7/8" x 13 7/8") non-pictorial red & royal blue lettered heavy card stock broadside promoting the show almost certainly performed in Vancouver, B. D., Canada. It was sponsored by Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans in Canada Unit 45, now located in North Van. Show dates Sept. 7-9, but no year given. Circa 1948. We find no references to the Polo Bros.
