Presentation copy signed & dated on preliminary blank page by Collins Nov. 26, 1928, to Will Marriott. In the same hand at bottom of the same page is written, "By Father 1928". One of the fine, classic books on early Oklahoma cattle ranching, at the Red Fork Ranch near Dover. Much on Indians. Some outlaw material. One doesn't hear much about this book, but it should be considered a high spot in the ranching history of Oklahoma. The author & his brother lived in the country during its formative days & spent four years researching their memories, consulting with the Okla Hist Soc & historian J. B. Thoburn. Sarah Darlington Covington, daughter of Cheyenne & Arapahoe Indian Agent, Brinton Darlington, was related to Collins. Collins' account of enduring a fierce prairie storm while tending a cattle herd is spectacular. Vg copy with a bit of dark spotting on the front cover. Mr. Edwards wants his friend, Billy, to know that he really wants to return to Austin for Christmas & the New Year, but his sister is "very anxious" for him to remain for the holidays with her. Like a good brother, he will: "I can't hardly refuse her Billy..." Rates at the Hotel were 50 cents to $2 a day., but it was worth it apparently: "Steam Heat, Electric Bills (?), Strictly First-class, Central Location." Illustrated with 105 engraved portraits & 52 wonderful engraved andscape, town, & architecturally related views. An immense amount of not only biographical information on leaders of Colorado associated with the Arkansas River valley, but on the sometimes hair-raising history of the following counties: Lake, El Paso, Chaffee, Fremont, Custer, Pueblo, Bent. Also sections on "History of Colorado", "Railroads", "Ten Mile Region", "Postscript" (Ute Rebellion). This copy has two portraits signed in pencil, Elton T. Beckwith (leading stockman of Custer Co.) & Peter Becker (businessman & former El Paso sheriff). There is also a lock of hair between a couple of pages. This copy rebacked with leather under original gilt-stamped spine, which is slightly flaked near the bottom. Light to moderate wear to the covers. New floral endpapers similar to original ones in poor condition. Library stamp on verso of title page, with some "bleeding" through showing part of the stamp in reverse on the title page, but not affecting any text.
