Ltd to 228 unnumbered copies. 153pp. Richly marbled endpapers. New Introductions by Beaumont Newhall & Fred Eggan. Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt. Only one illustration as this volume was intended to reproduce text. However, the illustration is the frontispiece, the famous Curtis self-portrait, of which a collector's magazine recently said, "Edward Curtis' self portrait is now considered one of the most important photographs of the twentieth century." A recent print at auction sold for 9K. Classic Gravure intended to reprint the entire Curtis work using original plates & "the finest of craftsmanship", but the company went out of business & this was the only volume produced. Editor's Note: "This text has been abridged from (Vols) I, II, XII, XVI, and XVII... The intention of this volume is to give a condensed account of the ways of life of the Southwestern Indians." Therefore, material on: Apache, Jicarillas, Navaho, Pima, Papago, Qahatika, Mohave, Yuma, Maricopa, Walapai, Havasupai, Apache-Mohave or Yavapai, Hopi, Tiwa, Keres, Zuni.
