870. Drake, Charles D. A. L. S. (autograph letter signed). N.p, , St. Louis, 2/11/1867, 1867. Paper. Not a book. Original handwritten letter in ink, front & back, on approx. 7 7/8" x 9 7/8" plain stationary. Addressed to Mr. H. Crittenden of Great Barrington, Mass., C. D. Drake is advising the former that he (Drake) is reimbursing the latter for the advance of $100 two years earlier to help finance the publication of Drake's speeches. Appleton & Co. of Cincinnati published them, but of the 2,000 copies to be printed, only 200 had sold, "and I have no reason to hope that the money so kindly advanced by those thirteen gentlemen will ever be repaid from the sales." Drake writes that he is under no "legal obligation to refund"... "yet I feel very uncomfortable in regard to the matter, and follow the dictates of my feelings in reimbursing, ..., out of my own pocket, the amount..." Drake, the writer of the letter, was a well known Republican Senator from Missouri, 1867 - 1870. He was a leading advocate of Radical Reconstruction after the Civil War, & in early 1865 was a "guiding light" in Missouri's passage, at a new Constitutional Convention, of an emancipation ordinance to replace the one of 1863. At the same convention, a new constitution ("Drake's Constitution") was approved with harsh measures toward the vanquished in Missouri. It was also dubbed "the Draconian Constitution" in criticism of Drake. Earlier, in 1863, Pres. Lincoln had telegraphed Drake & The Hon. H. T. Blow, saying, "It is very painful to me that you in Missouri cannot or will not settle your factional quarrel among yourselves. I have been tormented with it beyond endurance for months by both sides." Quite noteworthy is the fact that Drake, in May of 1847, was the attorney for plaintiffs Dred Scott & Harriet Scott against Irene Emerson as the former tried to secure their freedom. Early press-printed Drake documents & speeches command somewhat hefty prices. I find no original handwritten items by Drake available in the internet marketplace. While the topic of this letter is personal rather than policy, it is nice piece of ephemera from a significant figure in Missouri & national politics. The letter is nearly split in half at the mid, horizontal fold. There is a 2" split on a vertical fold. Both have been carefully closed with a minimum of thin, very transparent, archival material. Very beautiful handwriting & completely legible. Good. Paperback. (#0505056) $164.03
