FISHERY SS2 WEEK 10 3RD TERM 2019 2020
Spacing out for quick growth:
The spacing out principles applies to all developmental stages of cat-fish
(from fry to table size). It is a common knowledge in fish farming that if fish(es) are crowded in a pond, they do not grow fast. In the first week, a vat of 12x3 should be able to contain almost any quantity of fries that can be produced by female fish, but by the beginning of the second or third week, the need to separate the shoot out and reduce the quantity of fries therein. This is to allow them swim freely, feed

well and grow fast. Shoot outs are the strong aggressive fish that rush first for food, thereby get bigger and stronger than the less aggressive ones, they end up cannibalizing the small fishes.
Sorting:
Refers to the periodic distribution of fishes in different ponds according to their sizes, to reduce losses resulting from cannibalization of the weak by the stronger ones. Sorting is very important because it gives room for the smaller, weaker fish to feed well. Sorting should be carried out after three weeks from fingerlings stage onward. The object of sorting should be to leave fishes of the same size in the ponds. Therefore, sorting is the act of grouping fishes according to their sizes.
Medication:
The most common disease of fish is bacterial or fungus. Anti-fungus and bacterial medicines like Biogdon should always be available at the farm. If you notice that your fries are hanging i.e positioning themselves vertically in the pond, they may be suffering from a fungal or bacterial infection. Then it is time to apply an anti-fungal or bacterial medicine following strictly the recommended dosage otherwise, an overdose may lead to mass mortality of the fries. Salt can also be used where anti-fungal or bacterial medications are not available.
MANAGING AND NURSING FISH SEED
A fish seed/fry is the young fish nursed for breeding. A fish nursery allows the farmer to stock fish easier and assures higher survival for fry. Fish nursing is profitable.

Process of Fish Nursery
❖ Aeration
❖ Feeding with natural feed.
❖ Introduction of artificial feed.
Aeration:
It is important for fish seed being nursed to have sufficient air, so they
