In 1840, 2 men, age 20-30, lived with them, and one woman age 15-20. This might have been Chauncey’s brothers Charles and Erastus, and the wife of one of them. In 1850 a Linna Barber, age 30 with daughters Ellen E, age 10 and Nancy Marian, age 8, lived nearly adjacent to Chauncey’s family. Was Linna a sister-in-law? Edward worked on his father's farm in Portage until age 22, when, after a short stay in Indiana, he returned and

with his brother bought a small farm in Copley from his father. He soon sold his share to Spencer, because the farm

was too small for both of them. Edward worked as a stonemason and carpenter, and finally ended up farming again.

He was Assessor of the town of Portage for 2 terms. He and Caroline were members of the Disciples Church of

Akron.

Harlow m/2 14 Oct 1834 Sophronia C CASE, b Simsbury CT 7 Oct 1786, d Larwill 26 May 1883 “age 96 y, 7 mo, 21 d”, older sister of Elsie, and 12 years older than Harlow. Sophronia was the widow of Harlow’s uncle Roswell (she was Roswell’s second wife). The Case family moved from Simsbury to Loudon MA when Sophronia was 8 years old.


Before her death, Elsie made Sophronia promise to assume the care of her children, and made Harlow and Sophronia promise to marry within a reasonable time. In 1830 the census shows Sophronia in Sheldon in her 40’s with an older woman in her 60’s, and 1 girl b 1815-20, and 1 girl b 1820-25. Before his marriage, Harlow spent a year helping his uncle Israel Barber near the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia. Israel was a cattle dealer at the time. Then after their marriage, they lived to the south of Barber Hill, in Sheldon, Genesee Co NY (after 1843 in Wyoming Co) until 1839, when Harlow and his second wife moved to Troy, Whitley Co IN.
Harlow moved in 1839 with his wife and 5 sons, sailing from Buffalo to Toledo on the “Commodore Perry”, and then down the Maumee River on a flatboat to Ft. Wayne. From there the journey was completed on foot. In Troy he built a log cabin and cleared the land. In 1852 he sold out and bought a new farm, later occupied by his son Frederick B. Still later he lived in Richland, in the Larwill section. Harlow was a mason by trade. Sophronia was a teacher from age 15 to 30, when she married, and also helped support the family by weaving. She and Harlow joined the Methodist Church in Troy in 1840. For the last 12 years of her life, Sophronia lived with her stepson Winfield S. E.L., as he was called, led a varied life. He spent considerable time deciding what he wanted to do. He studied

medicine under Dr E.H. Sutton in Miami County OH for 3 years, and taught school during the last of it. Then he

spent a few months in the “dissecting room”, after which he attended a private school in Ft. Wayne for a summer.

He then taught geography for a time.


In 1852 he organized a mining company with his brother Frederick and others, and spent 7 years in California. He

returned in 1859 to care for a brother, sick with consumption. From then on he ran a dry-goods business, first in

Huntsville, then Etna and finally Larwill, where he was also Postmaster for several years. He was an Indiana State

Legislator for a time. [~ 1880 census:Richland ~]

ii PHIL K10, b 1898/9; d IN 1952; m 1928 Martha L BROWN, b OH 1898/9, daughter of --- and Hattie

(LAUGHLIN) BROWN. Phil was an advertising sales agent in Ft Wayne IN in 1930. Martha’s

mother, a widow, lived with them, along with a brother of Hattie. [~1930 census~]

Oneida Elizabeth (MEIER) CARRINGTON. In 1930 she was a public school teacher in Fort Wayne. Ruth

and Gerald lived in Fort Wayne in 1940; Gerald was a Brick Mason.

American War. He attended Tri-State College in Angola, Steuben Co IN. In 1930 Eliza lived with Edwin and Ary.

Edwin was then a salesman of household cleaners, and Ary ran a beauty shop in Fort Wayne. Later Edwin was a

Salesman for Victor Safe and Lock Company. [~ 1900 census: Richland ~]
