Milo learned to be a tanner in Connecticut, at age 18. He then worked in Newark NJ for a time, and next went to Greene Co NY before age 30. He and Myranda moved to Kosciusko Co IN in 1838, along with his sister Nancy and brother Myron; he brought his wife and 4 children and all their worldly possessions by ox team, in one load. He built a cabin on 80 acres, cleared the land, and farmed. He was a great hunter and trapper. He was associated with William Thorne in the fur business. This was profitable enough to allow Milo to buy another 80 acres. The family lived in Franklin, Koscusko Co in 1850; in Seward (Silver Lake) in 1860 and after.
Milo was the first trustee of Seward Township, 1859 - 1864.
According to a biographical sketch they had 18 children, including 3 sets of twins. 6 of the sons served in the Civil War. Milo told of hearing the cannons in New Orleans in the War of 1812, when he was 9 years old. He was active in the “Underground Railroad”, to help slaves escape to their freedom.
