Daniel graduated from Pownal Seminary, and Williams College, class of 1859. He taught school for a while, during college days, and for a year in Georgia, right after graduation. Then for the next five years he farmed. From 1865 to 1871 Daniel was a cotton goods manufacturer in North Pownal. He and William C PLUNKETT erected a large factory to produce print cloth. He and Jonathan BROOKS, his brother-in-law, had a tannery business in Stamford VT, and later in Blackinton. After that tannery burned, Daniel erected one in Greenbush, Rensselaer Co NY, with his son Frank J, and at Readsboro VT with his son Archer. Daniel was a Republican. He was elected Selectman in North Adams. He was a Trustee of one of the banks there, and a member of the Congregational Church.
In her early schooling in Pownal, Julia had as teachers future presidents James GARFIELD and Chester ARTHUR, both of whom taught in Pownal while attending Williams College.

In 1920 they were in Livingston, Overton Co TN, living in a school (C W B M) dormitory and teaching.
The school was Livingston Academy, founded by the Christian Women’s Mission Board of the Disciples of Christ Denomination. It is now a public high school. Geneva was librarian. In 1930 they lived in Township 7, Craven Co NC. Thomas was principal and teacher. [~ census ~]
