He served in the Civil War, in Company K, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry. In 1880 they lived in Anoka, Anoka Co MN, where Louis and Frank worked in a sawmill. In 1900 Marinda, divorced, lived

with her son Frank in Anoka. By 1900, Marinda had borne 3 children, but only 1 was living.

When Merritt was in school in Pownal he had as a teacher Chester ARTHUR, who was studying at Williams

College and teaching part of the time. Merritt graduated from Williams College, where James GARFIELD was a

student for a time. Then Merritt went on to law school in Cleveland OH, at Ohio State and Union Law College, where he graduated in 1859.

Merritt practiced law in Pownal prior to the Civil War. He became Assistant Clerk of the Vermont House of

Representatives for the 1860-1862 sessions.
General Barber took part in the Civil War, in which he enlisted as a private in Company E, 10th Vermont Regiment,

1862. In 2 months he was made a 1st Lieutenant. In 1864 he was a Captain in the same Regiment. He participated

in the battles at Antietam in 1862, Gettysburg in 1863, the Wilderness Campaign in 1864, and was at Lee's

surrender in 1865.


After the War, he was involved in the campaign against Geronimo, and was also in the Spanish-American War, in

the Phillippines. Williams College awarded him an honorary LL.D Degree in 1900. In 1901 Merritt was awarded the

rank of Brigadier General in the Volunteers. Delilah Barber became a world traveler, perhaps because of her

husband's travels with the Army. While he was in the Phillippines; in 1900 Delilah went from Bennington VT to join him in his

Noel m/2 25 Dec 1859 Mrs. Olive (WATERMAN) HEWETT, b 7 Apr 1810, d 13 Oct 1880, (this was her 3rd marriage), daughter of Resolved and Abigail (JAMES) WATERMAN. Olive m/1 1825 Elisha P CHEESBRO, and had 1 child. She m/2 Hiram HEWETT, and had 1 child.


Noel was a carpenter and wheelwright and was called a "mechanical genius". He built a dam and ran a sawmill in the Barber District of Pownal, where Barber Pond and Barber School are located.
