378. ?JOHN7 BARBER (Elisha Westover6), b probably St Lawrence Co NY 1793/4; d Delhi, Ingham Co MI 21 May 1871; m Mary McMANUS, b OH 12 Feb 1796, d Delhi 22 Apr 1871, daughter of James McMANUS; r Bennington, Delaware Co OH in 1830, Brown, Darke Co OH in 1840, and after that in Wabash, Adams Co IN, and in 1870 in Delhi, MI, where his sons Richard and Hallett were also.

John is probably a brother of Hallett and George, since he was in Bennington OH, Darke Co OH and then in Adams Co IN, next to Wells Co where Hallett was. Also he named a son Hallett, a very unusual first name. [~ Corresp:Carolyn Masur; Corresp:Michael Potter ~]

CAUTION; These 3 brothers, John, Hallett and George may not be sons of Elisha Westover BARBER. I have found no direct evidence of it.

As explained in the book, there has been evidence passed down from Hallet’s grandson Ira Everett BARBER to his great-granddaughter Margaret

E BARBER (a correspondent of mine) stating that Hallett’s father was Elisha Westover BARBER.

A different type of evidence raises the possibility that the 3 brothers are descended from the Rhode Island Barbers, descendants of Moses Barber,

b 1652. A 12 location Y-DNA test indicates this relationship. However, 12 location tests are poor evidence.

379. ?Rev. HALLETT7 BARBER (Elisha Westover6), b NY 21 Dec 1798; d in Barber’s Mills, in Rockford, Wells Co IN 22 Aug 1849; m in Delaware Co OH, about 1818 Sarah Elizabeth VINING, b Delaware Co 16 Feb 1802, of a Scottish family, d Barber’s Mills 4 Jan 1861, daughter of Jonas and Sarah (PAGE) VINING. When he was young, Hallett’s family went to Vermont for a while, and then back to New York State. At age 18 Hallett walked to the area of Franklin and Delaware Counties, Ohio.

The water-powered sawmill and gristmill that Hallett and his son Emerson built in Rockford, Wells Co IN was ill-fated. An engine was put in later, which exploded in 1877, killing 2 men, and destroying the mill. It was never rebuilt.

In 1829 he entered the ministry. In about 1838 he moved his family from Nimmous Cross Roads, Delaware Co to Darke Co OH. He was to buy land, clear it and sell it for profit, thus financing his church work. He organized the Six Mile Church, a New Lighthouse Christian Church (now part of the United Church of Christ), in 1838, near Bluffton in Wells Co IN.
A few years later they moved again, to Wells County IN, where with his son Emerson, Hallett built the first water-powered grist mill in Wells County. That area is still known as Barber’s Mills. Barber’s Mills was the original name of Rockford, Wells Co. In his career as a minister, Hallett cleared farms in four different places, formed a riding circuit, with churches he planted in OH and IN. He started the Bluffton Conference of Christian Churches, and was early a part of the Eel River Conference of the Christian Church. In 1849 he came to the aid of a neighbor suffering from cholera, unfortunately contracted the disease himself, and died of it.
