ELISHA WESTOVER7 BARBER (Elisha Westover6), b probably Massena, St Lawrence Co NY 1810; d Sauk Co WI 25 Oct 1846; m Emeline Susan (Sarah) WATERBURY, b Massena 31 Jul 1812, d Wilson Co KS 10 Mar 1899; buried near Earlton, Neosho Co KS, daughter of Solomon (or Samuel) and Hannah (SCOFIELD) WATERBURY; r Louisville, St Lawrence Co NY in 1840. In 1850 Emeline and her 3 daughters lived there with Hannah Waterbury, age 61, and Samuel Waterbury, age 62. Elisha went with the Solomon Waterbury family to Sumter WI to homestead, and bought land next to them.
They both started building houses. Some of the walls were of brick. When Elisha was working on his by himself, a wall collapsed, killing him. Emeline then moved out to WI with her 3 daughters. The first, Mary Jane, married George F HOUGHTON, one was a schoolteacher in WI, and the third died young. Emeline lived next to Mary Jane in Minnesota.
Sarah’s grandfather Peter Cooke WATERBURY was from Connecticut. He was a loyalist, and tried to escape with his family to Nova Scotia during the Revolution. They made it as far as St John, New Brunswick. Eventually Solomon’s family made its way back to the U.S, to Massena NY, where Elisha W met and married Sarah. HOUGHTON of Barnet, Caledonia Co VT and Kingston, Sauk Co WI. In 1870 and 1880 they farmed in Pleasant Valley, Wilson

Co KS; Mary Jane‘s mother lived with them in 1870. In 1900 George farmed in Maricopa Co AZ, no other family members

present. Apparently George lived in Arizona from about 1894 on, without Mary

Jane, but they were still married. George served in the Civil War, in Company D, Brackett’s Battalion, Minnesota

4th Regiment, U.S. Volunteers. They farmed in York Co NE in 1880. Farmed in Sherman, Frontier

Co NE in 1900. Lived in Hyannis, Grant Co NE in 1910: John worked in a Grocery Store. In 1920 John and Mary lived in Burley,

them. In 1920 and 1930 Edmond was farming, and Jennie ran her store. Maud helped on the farm.

and Sarah farmed in Summerhill in 1880. In 1900 Eugene, widowed, lived and farmed in Summerhill. His mother

was with him. In 1910 Eugene and Hattie ran the farm.


v ALBERN8, b probably Summerhill, Cayuga Co NY 1828/9; An A H Barber, b NY 1828/9 is seen in Marathon, Cortland Co NY (about 20 miles from Summerhill); he m Frances ---, b NY 1829/30; farmed in Summerhill, Cayuga Co NY in 1850, where he lived with his mother and sister Julia. After that A H was a station agent in Marathon in 1860 and 1870. In 1880 he was station agent in Queensbury, Warren Co NY, where there were a lot of other Barbers, but I see no relationship. farmed in Groton, Tompkins Co NY. In 1900 they were in Venice, Cayuga Co NY, where Warren was a wagon-maker. They had

They lived in Moravia before 1900, but soon left for “the West”. While in Moravia, Humphrey ran a shoe store for several years. In 1900 they were in Minneapolis MN where

Humphrey was a wallpaper salesman, and Luman a bookkeeper. In 1910 he was a department store salesman in Syracuse NY.

manager in a brokerage firm. In 1930 he was widowed, boarding with a McIntyre family in Syracuse, working as a

They moved from Kentucky to Mercer Co OH in 1832, where they bought land north of the St Mary’s River. brother of Aaron JOHNS who married Relief’s aunt Eunice. Family tradition has it that Isaiah went to Kansas, and

that Relief and her daughter were caught in Cincinnati in a cholera epidemic and died there.

v Capt. ABRAM V8, b Union Twp 2 Oct 1839; d 23 Dec 1866; unmarried. He died of wounds received at Atlanta

in the Battle of Peachtree Creek, during General Sherman's march to Atlanta in Aug 1864. He was Captain

of Company C, 31st Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. One of Abram’s swords that he used as a Captain was

handed down to his brother Austin’s son Warren Austin, and was a prize possession.
