How does CMT compare to rail projects :

Capital Costs Per Rider,

Trains are very expensive at $100,000 + per new rider

Bus and van are much cheaper.

  • Commuter Rail :

  • Urban Rail :

  • Van Pool :

  • Express Bus :

  • Taxi Van :

  • $100,000

  • $130,000 to $ 1,000,000

  • $2,500

  • $1,250

  • $ 800

Bang for the Buck

$130,000 will buy either :
One new train rider

OR

52 new riders using Van Pools

OR

83 new riders using Circulator Vans

Is it More important to :
give one worker a train ride to the down town

Or

give 52 workers van rides to jobs all over town ?

Connections with CMT and UR

CMT would reach 90% of Homes And 90% of Jobs.
Percentage of All Possible Home to Work Trips = .90 x .90 = .81 or 81% for CMT

UR would reach 9% of Homes and 20% of Jobs.
Percentage of All Possible Home to Work Trips = .09 x .20 = .018 or 1.8% for UR
Only 72,000, or 9%, of Austin pop lives within half mile of the proposed urban rail line

Compare CMT to UR

Annual figures are to finance capital costs and rents. If we finance 17 billion over 30 years, at 7%, it would be $ 135 million a year.

CMT annual capital cost include rental subsidy for 30 child care facilities at transit hubs. Residents of every neighborhood would be able to combine tasks on one transit trip. Return from work + day care pickup + grocery shopping

Can we create Density with CMT ? Here’s How :

High density TODS at TCs - Part 1

START UP

  • Pick shopping center with Grocery Store

  • Add day care by renting a store front,

  • Add waiting room for vans by renting a store front

  • Add bicycle lock up room

  • Design circulator routes to converge on this shopping & transit center

  • Design express routes to connect these centers

LATER, after EVERY neighborhood has service :

Build community centers to host child care, teen recreation facility , and game room for seniors.

And Build transit center with fast board gates for bus and van, lockers for bikes

Buildings, including Comm Center and Transit center, are anchors that commit the city to providing bus and van service for decades to come.

High density TODS at TCs – Part 2

City Relaxes parking requirements.

Zones Circulator Routes for higher density commercial and residential

Developers Build Mixed Use on Circulator Routes with Less parking area per person :

  • Apartments with ground level shops

  • Office Buildings with shops

Just 6 TODS at TCs will enable 240,000 people to live car free lives

20 DUA, 1.5 people per DU, 30 people per acre, 19,000 people per sq mile,

2 sq miles within one mile of each TOD, 38 k pop per TOD, 240,000 could live at 6 TODs

Conclusion : CMT will:

  • Increase ridership three fold

  • Reduce travel time and wait time

  • Get 80,000 cars off the road

  • Save Working Poor $320 million a year

  • Enable 240,000 people to live car free
