Barbara Jayne Keller - She showed strong spirit throughout life

Life Stories - Barbara Jayne Keller met future spouse during war

By MARIAN ACCARDI, Times Staff Writer

George Keller saw Barbara Jayne Johnson on the dance floor at a dinner club in Savannah, Ga., one evening in the summer of 1943. She was to be his blind date the next night, but Keller's friend went ahead and introduced them.

Even then, Keller, who had just graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, knew this woman was special. Today, he still remembers thinking to himself, "Wow."

"She stood out."

Keller would return to Savannah three years later to marry Johnson - on May 18, 1946 - after he had served with a submarine force in the Pacific during World War II, then moved on to flight training in Texas.

"I always believed I had found my No. 1 choice in my life and I had no second thoughts about it," said Keller. "I knew almost from the day I first saw her on the dance floor."

Barbara Jayne Keller was 78 when she died Jan. 7. Survivors include her husband; five children, George Adam Keller IV, Barbara Elizabeth Daniels, Charles Malcolm Keller, Joanne Alice Keller-Wolf and David Oliver Keller; and 15 grandchildren.

The Kellers' youngest child, David, has lived in Huntsville all his life except while he was away at college. "I got to see their love for each other often, even through their verbal debates, which were usually fueled by their strong individual personalities," he said. "They always supported each other through the good times, and the bad."

The Kellers moved often because of Keller's career with the Navy and his work with its nuclear weapons program. "Barbara never complained," George Keller said. "We just chuckled about having to move so much. She was a real trouper." The Kellers came to Huntsville in 1963 when he joined NASA.

Barbara Keller wore very classic clothes, and her gray hair was always carefully swept back in a bun. "She got dressed up to go to the dentist," David recalled.

She loved to garden, David said, spending sunny days in the back yard planting flowers and shrubs. On rainy and cold days, she would needlepoint, sew or re-upholster furniture.

"When she got started on a project, she was very focused, and it had to be perfect," said her daughter-in-law, Betsy Keller.

In late 1997, Keller was diagnosed with stage IV endometrial cancer, meaning that the cancer had spread beyond the pelvis, and doctors gave her six months to a year to live. But family members say that Keller was able to overcome the disease with the help of her doctors, five months of radiation treatments, her strong spirit, a healthy diet and regular exercise at Jazzercise classes. Keller, who was called a "miracle patient" by her doctors, got a clear CT scan after her treatments. "She was thankful for every day that she was given," said David. OBITUARY

Eleanor Ruth Drew June 11, 1939 - January 31, 2013

E. Ruth Oliver Drew passed away on January 31, 2013 at the age of 73. Born June 11, 1939, the only daughter of the late Opal and Ray Oliver of Forest Park, GA. She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Robert Richard (Rick) Hall. She attended Hapeville High School, class of 1957, but she graduated in summer school 1962. Ms. Drew worked 8 years with civil service, 12 years J.C. Penney Catalog Distribution, major truck lines, and local delivery service. She is survived by her sons: James W., Frank D., and William W. Hall; daughter; Deyna L. Lewis; daughter-in-law: Linda Hall; son-in-law: Leland Lewis; grandsons: Mark Hall, Kristopher Holmes, Kelvin Holmes, Michael Hall; granddaughters: Jennifer, Katie, and Libbie Hall; great-grandsons: Jorden and Hayden Holmes; aunts and cousins. I’ve written my obituary mainly because I had the time and knew more about myself than anyone. I also wanted to save my family the trouble of putting this together and this gives me the chance to thank everyone who went beyond expectations and to omit whatever. I enjoyed and loved my family. My mother was the best there was. I loved to dance, bowl, cook, crochet, swim, read, play chess and socialize. I want to thank Betty Marie for being my V.B.F since high school; Deyna, Frank, Woody and my sister-in-law, Jane who were there for me during chemo and radiation; Kelvin and Deyna for being my caregivers; Iesha, my CNA with hospice who treated me like family; Deyna and Leland for making my own apartment in their new home; Rosie, my Boston terrier for being my companion since 2006. Last but not least, I want to thank the good Lord for my days on earth and for the love ones he gave me.

Albert Oliver dug into a box of his dead son’s momentoes to retrieve a photograph of three flag-draped coffins inside the bay of a military cargo plane. One of the coffins carried his sons body. Oliver stiffened at the sight, proud and angry at the same time.

That is the end result of trying to fight a war with makeshift equipment,” said the World War II combat veteran, who later made a living fixing military aircraft. “That’s what burns me.”

His son, Butch, died March 25, 2003 when the single engine plane he was piloting slammed into the Columbian Jungle, killing all three men aboard. The crew, civilian contractors who worked for the military, was searching for three colleagues being held hostage by Columbian Rebels. their plane had crashed and they were captured)

Butch Oliver was hired by California Microwave Systems, a Northrup Grumann subsidiary, to replace one of two pilots who had quit the program citing safety concerns including the use of single engine airplanes and the expansion of their mission to include heavier payloads and longer flights. “It was a suicidal mission, almost.” Said one of the two pilots.

Albert Oliver tried to talk his son out of the job in Columbia. But, Butch Oliver saw ‘The Chance of a Lifetime.” His mother (Betty) said. “Excitement, fulfillment and a $100,000 dollar a year salary. “God will take care of me” he told his parents.

The military classified its investigations of the two crashes as a secret. The Olivers said all they ever got was a half page summary that says the plane hit a 100 ft. tree on a 4400 ft. ridge while on a night time climb out from an airport.

In Spalding County, the Oliver’s surround themselves with reminders of their son. A wooden clock he made and gave to his mother two days before leaving for Columbia hangs on the wall. The ticking soothes her.”
