Mrs. Laura Elizabeth Ulmer Cook Oliver (1854-1927)

Mrs. Laura Elizabeth Oliver died shortly before 10 o'clock yesterday morning after a short illness at the residence 2237 Whitaker Street. She is survived by her husband, George B. Oliver; a daughter, Miss Ethelyne Oliver; a son, J. Oliver Cook of Madrid, Iowa; three sisters, Miss Irene V. Oliver of Richmond, Va; Miss Florence E. Oliver of Clearwater, Fla., and Mrs. H. S. Haupt of Savannah; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mary A. Cook of Tampa; two grandchildren, Mrs. J. Ellis Brown of Tampa and J. Oliver Cook, Jr. of Madrid, Iowa, and a great grandchild. Mrs. Oliver was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are being held pending the arrival of her son. Savannah Morning News, June 5, 1927, page 2

OBITUARY

The funeral of J. H. Ulmer, who died Wednesday was held yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence, 204 East Thirty-Ninth Street, by Rev. John S. Wilder, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. Interment was in Laurel Grove Cemetery. The pallbearers were Frank Stewart, Ben Wallis, George B. Oliver203, S. H. Oliver204, Norton Frierson and J. R. Cain.205

Edgar married Ella Frances PAYTON, daughter of Thomas Asbury PAYTON and Milda Catherine KELLEY, on 23 Feb 1913 in Fulton Co., GA. Ella was born 24 May 1892. She died 12 Apr 1984 in Cobb Co., GA.219

After they were married they lived in Atlanta where Edgar worked as a boilermaker for the (government during World War I. He also worked as a mechanic before he was forced to quit due to crippling arthritis. When he was physically able he drove a truck for a lumber and coal company and then as his condition got worse as a mechanic at home. She continued to work at the mill. They had six children: William Ray, Frances Elizabeth, Edgar Foster, Robert, Mary Evelyn and Julia Catherine. Robert, who had been born in 1919 contracted infantile paralysis at the age of four months, and for two weeks his parents watched helplessly as he died. Edgar was so upset he had to be sedated from shock and chills.”220
