There is a lot to learn about the creations of Beatrix Potter—not only is she the author and illustrator of one of the world’s most famous children’s books,TheTaleofPeterRabbit, but also a pioneering conservationist with the spirit of a scientist.
“Potter grew up as the daughter of a wealthy Victorian family, but along with her brother filled an entire floor of their large house in London with all sorts of animals,”said Anne Lundin,a retired professor for the UW-Madison School of Library Studies.
“As an adult, she was afrustrated botanical illustrator and scientist. That field was not open to her because she was female,”Lundin said.Potter was urged to turn the charming illustrations and stories she wrote in letters to children into books. She wrote 23 books in all— a body of work that has inspired plays, ballets, films and an astonishing amount of merchandise.
“PeterRabbit is probably the most famous children’s book in the world, which was published 113 years ago and has really stood the test of time. It’s been translated into 36 languages. The parents and grandparents will share it with the next generation,”said Lundin.
Potter also made a mark on the world through her land conservation.“In many ways, she was like Peter Rabbit, venturing into a world of adventure and risk. She withdrew from London as soon as she started making some money on her books to the Lake District and became an extremely important farmer and conservationist. She preserved and passed on 15 farms and over 4,000 acres, which was given back to the country as gifts in the 20th century,”said Lundin.

At the end of the spring semester in May,students taking Georgia Tech’s online Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence course received some surprising news.Jill Watson, one of the nine teaching assistants (TAs) that had helped them finish the challenging course for the past five months was not a “she” but an “it”—an intelligent robot!
Watson is the brainchild of Ashok Goel, who teaches the popular online course. The Professor of Computer and Cognitive Science in the School of Interactive Computing came up with the idea as a way to deal with the number of questions posed by students in the online forums(论坛).According to Goel, every time the course is offered, the 300 or so students that enroll post over 10,000 questions. The questions are often repetitive. This led Goel to wonder if a smart robot would handle the questions which require standard responses—things like dates when assignments are due.
Having worked with IBM’s Watson technology platform in the past, the professor knew it would be ideal for his artificial TA:Jill Watson. The artificial intelligence system that uses natural language processing and machine learning to analyze large amounts of data has even been cleverer than human competitors on the television show.It would therefore easily be able to handle routine questions that required little “thinking”.
The professor and his team of graduate students began by populating Jill’s memory with 40,000 questions and answers from past terms. Then came the testing stage. At first,Jill was not very good and often gave strange answers. It often got stuck on certain keywords.By the end of the semester,Jill had attained enough knowledge and skills to participate in forums without any management from Goel,or the other assistants.
28.What surprised the students who take the online course?
A.The course was interesting but challenging.

B.Ashok Goel Came up with the Idea of Jill Watson
C.Jill Watson—One of the Nine Teaching Assistants
D.Georgia Tech’s Teaching Assistant Turn Out to Be a Robot
30.Why did Goel decide to invent a smart robot?
A.A number of students took his online course.
B.A smart robot is cleverer than a human being.
C.Too many similar questions are to be dealt with.
D.A smart robot could be easily controlled by him.
31.What can we infer from the text?
A.Students should deal with routine questions.
B.Jill is mainly in charge of posting surprising news.
C.The TAs give students homework at a certain time.
D.Goel is satisfied with Jill’s present performance.

Fidel Castro was born at his father’s farm on August 13,1926.His father,Angel Castro, was a migrant to Cuba from Galicia,Northwest Spain. He had become financially successful by growing sugarcane at Las Manacas farm in Birán,Oriente Province.
Aged six,Castro was sent to live with his teacher in Santiago de Cuba, before being baptized(洗礼)into the Roman Catholic Church at the age of eight.Being baptized enabled Castro to attend the La Salle boarding school in Santiago, where he regularly misbehaved,so he was sent to the privately funded Dolores School in Santiago. In 1945 he transferred to a more famous school,De Belén in Havana.Although Castro took an interest in history, geography and debating at Belén,he did not excel academically, instead devoting much of his time to playing sport.
In 1945,Castro began studying law at the University of Havana, where he became involved in student activism, and the violent gangsterism culture within the university.Passionate about anti-imperialism and opposing U.S.interference in the Caribbean,he unsuccessfully campaigned for the presidency of the Federation of University Students on a platform of “honesty, decency and justice”.Castro became critical of the corruption and violence of President Ramon Grau’s government, delivering a public speech on the subject in November 1946 that received coverage on the front page of several newspapers.
In 1947,Castro joined the Party of the Cuban People, founded by Eduardo Chibás.Chibás advocated social justice, honest government, and political freedom, while his party exposed corruption and demanded reform.Though Chibás lost the election,Castro remained devoted to working on his behalf.Social situation becoming worse,Castro soon received a death threat urging him to leave the university; refusing,he began carrying a gun and surrounding himself with armed friends.
