What makes a student competitive?
-
GPA 3.6, ACT 27, SAT (2-part) 1260 (averages for scholarship offers)
-
Demonstrated Scholar, Athlete, Leader (SAL) qualities
-
Looking to pursue a STEM major (but not required)
-
Complete entire application process by 10 Oct of Senior year
-
Seniors have until 10 Jan to submit application; 28 Feb to complete additional requirements
-
Student can select up to 7 schools they are interested in attending
-
After Cadet Command confirms receiving application
-
Must have HS counselor/advisor send in current transcripts & SAT/ACT scores
-
Must take a Physical Assessment Test, administered by a HS representative
-
Must schedule a Professor of Military Science (PMS) Interview at the closest Army ROTC program
-
Cadet Command holds scholarship boards mid- Oct, mid-Jan, and mid-Mar
-
Out of approximately 6000 applications, last year Cadet Command offered 1000 4-year scholarships and 1000 3-year Advance Designated scholarships

Once offer is made student can start DODMERB/medical qualification process

Once offer is made, scholarship transfers can be requested, but are not guaranteed

Student must be enrolled in a Military Science class and leadership lab

Typically 3-year or less scholarships (based on College CGPA, Army PT scores, Major, PMS)

Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) of 80/80/80/Total of 250

2-mins of push-ups; 10 min break; 2-mins of sit-ups; 10 min break; 2-mile run

19 year old male: 57 push-ups, 66 sit-ups, 14:20 2-mile run

19 year old female: 31 push-ups, 66 sit-ups, 17:10 2-mile run

students can Google Army APFT to find a calculator

Interested in a GRFD scholarship

This type of scholarship will become more and more the norm

Student must drill one weekend a month as an SMP Cadet

Pursuing a STEM Major

Scholarship Incentives

Army ROTC scholarships pay for Full Tuition & Mandatory Fees, or Room & Board

$600/semester for books & supplies

Monthly tax-free stipend ($300/FR, $350/SO, $450/JR, $500/SR)

Active Duty is very competitive, future expects only 50% getting active duty commissions
Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) Cadet
-
Students looking to enlist into the National Guard or Army Reserves.

Part-time commitment (one weekend a month, two weeks during the summer)
-
Still capable of being a full-time college student
-
Basic Combat Training (BCT) / Advance Individual Training (AIT)
-
Can go to BCT between Jr/Sr year in HS
-
Can go to AIT between Sr year / start of College
-
Most go to BCT/AIT before starting College
-
Many take a Summer & Semester off to go to BCT/AIT

Completing BCT entitles student to Federal & State (National Guard) Tuition Assistance
-
Eligible for Federal TA after serving 1-year of service (approx $4500/year)

National Guardsmen may be eligible for State TA immediately after BCT
-
Each State NG is different, so they need to talk to NG Recruiter
-
National Guardsmen may be eligible for both Fed & State TA after 1-year service
-
Completing AIT entitles full-time students to monthly GI Bill/GI Bill kicker payments (approx $250-350/mo)
-
Effective 1 Jan 2015, Students can’t receive both TA and GI Bill benefits at the same time for the same courses.

National Guard/Army Reserve soldiers receive weekend drill pay (approx $150/mo)
-
Army ROTC Program can contract SMP Cadets as soon as they are Academic Sophomores (30 credit hours)

Contracted SMP Cadets received Monthly tax-free stipend (mentioned above)

Contracted SMP Cadets start getting paid an as E5 for weekend drills
-
Good course of action for resident students going to a state university (lower tuition rates)
