Scholarships

  1. High School Cadet Command

  • Online, available after 30 Jun of Junior year at www.goarrmy.com/rotc

  • What makes a student competitive?

    • GPA 3.6, ACT 27, SAT (2-part) 1260 (averages for scholarship offers)

    • Demonstrated Scholar, Athlete, Leader (SAL) qualities

    • Looking to pursue a STEM major (but not required)

    • Complete entire application process by 10 Oct of Senior year

  • Seniors have until 10 Jan to submit application; 28 Feb to complete additional requirements

    • Student can select up to 7 schools they are interested in attending

    • After Cadet Command confirms receiving application

      • Must have HS counselor/advisor send in current transcripts & SAT/ACT scores

      • Must take a Physical Assessment Test, administered by a HS representative

      • Must schedule a Professor of Military Science (PMS) Interview at the closest Army ROTC program

  • Cadet Command holds scholarship boards mid- Oct, mid-Jan, and mid-Mar

  • Out of approximately 6000 applications, last year Cadet Command offered 1000 4-year scholarships and 1000 3-year Advance Designated scholarships

  • Once offer is made student can start DODMERB/medical qualification process

  • Once offer is made, scholarship transfers can be requested, but are not guaranteed

  1. On-Campus Scholarships

  • Student must be enrolled in a Military Science class and leadership lab

  • Typically 3-year or less scholarships (based on College CGPA, Army PT scores, Major, PMS)

    • STEM

    • GRFD (Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty) – commissioned into the National Guard or Army Reserves only

    • Language (majoring in a DOD critical language)

    • Line / Active Duty

  • What makes a student competitive?

    • CGPA > 3.0

    • Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) of 80/80/80/Total of 250

      • 2-mins of push-ups; 10 min break; 2-mins of sit-ups; 10 min break; 2-mile run

      • 19 year old male: 57 push-ups, 66 sit-ups, 14:20 2-mile run

      • 19 year old female: 31 push-ups, 66 sit-ups, 17:10 2-mile run

      • students can Google Army APFT to find a calculator

    • Interested in a GRFD scholarship

      • This type of scholarship will become more and more the norm

      • Student must drill one weekend a month as an SMP Cadet

    • Pursuing a STEM Major

    • Active participant in the Army ROTC program

  1. Scholarship Incentives

  • Army ROTC scholarships pay for Full Tuition & Mandatory Fees, or Room & Board

  • $600/semester for books & supplies

  • Monthly tax-free stipend ($300/FR, $350/SO, $450/JR, $500/SR)

  1. Active Duty is very competitive, future expects only 50% getting active duty commissions

Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) Cadet

  1. Students looking to enlist into the National Guard or Army Reserves.

  2. Part-time commitment (one weekend a month, two weeks during the summer)

    1. Still capable of being a full-time college student

  3. Basic Combat Training (BCT) / Advance Individual Training (AIT)

    1. Can go to BCT between Jr/Sr year in HS

    2. Can go to AIT between Sr year / start of College

    3. Most go to BCT/AIT before starting College

    4. Many take a Summer & Semester off to go to BCT/AIT

  4. Completing BCT entitles student to Federal & State (National Guard) Tuition Assistance

    1. Eligible for Federal TA after serving 1-year of service (approx $4500/year)

    2. National Guardsmen may be eligible for State TA immediately after BCT

      1. Each State NG is different, so they need to talk to NG Recruiter

    3. National Guardsmen may be eligible for both Fed & State TA after 1-year service

  5. Completing AIT entitles full-time students to monthly GI Bill/GI Bill kicker payments (approx $250-350/mo)

  6. Effective 1 Jan 2015, Students can’t receive both TA and GI Bill benefits at the same time for the same courses.

  7. National Guard/Army Reserve soldiers receive weekend drill pay (approx $150/mo)

  8. Army ROTC Program can contract SMP Cadets as soon as they are Academic Sophomores (30 credit hours)

    1. Contracted SMP Cadets received Monthly tax-free stipend (mentioned above)

    2. Contracted SMP Cadets start getting paid an as E5 for weekend drills

  9. Good course of action for resident students going to a state university (lower tuition rates)

Military Service Obligation

  1. 8- year service obligation for all commissioned officers

  2. Scholarship Cadets

    1. 4-year active duty commitment (then continue AD, NG/Resv, or IRR)

    2. 8-year National Guard/Reserve commitment

  3. Non-scholarship Cadets (includes SMP Cadets)

    1. 3-year active duty commitment (then continue AD, NG/Resv, or IRR)

    2. 6-year National Guard/Reseve commitment (then continue NG/Resv or IRR)
