Senior Equipment Operator

Job Description

Basic Function:

Operates medium to heavy equipment in performing semi-skilled and skilled work for the Atlanta Highway District.

Acts as contact person for AHD when Commissioners are not available or when so designated by the Board of Commissioners.

Acts as supervisor/instructor for other equipment operators employed by the AHD.



Major Duties:

  1. Mentors, instructs, and directs work of other equipment operators employed by the AHD.

  2. Helps to define job priorities and work commitments of the equipment operators.

  3. Communicates with the Board of Commissioners frequently to determine job and work schedules.

  4. Completes road and bridge maintenance work by selecting appropriate equipment and finishes work as outlined.

  5. Operates various semi-heavy and heavy duty road and bridge maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, snow plows, front end loaders, graders, backhoes, and trailers to haul a variety of equipment.

  6. Performs maintenance activities such as blading and patching road surfaces, snow and ice removal, ditch cleaning, emergency traffic control and installing and repairing guardrails and culverts.

  7. Performs daily equipment inspections and preventive maintenance checks. Completes minor equipment maintenance and repairs to keep equipment in good working condition. Reports major maintenance needs in a timely manner to avoid costly repairs and down time.

  8. Heavy lifting is required when changing cutting edges, installing and removing truck and heavy equipment chains, changing grader, loader, backhoe and truck tires, etc.

  9. Maintains proper signing in work areas to protect operators and to assure public safety. Installs and monitors proper road and bridge signs and maintains them to designated state, county and local standards.

  10. Safely transports equipment and materials.

  11. Makes decisions on how to best accomplish each job and sets work priorities daily

  12. Monitors road conditions during adverse weather, especially during periods of heavy snowfall, rainstorms or severe winds and contacts immediate supervisor to inform of unusual road conditions that may be hazardous or unsafe.



  1. Required to work in all weather conditions, under hazardous conditions on obstructed and mountainous roads, in considerable noise, around operating equipment, fumes, and hazardous materials. Some projects require working with chemicals, toxic materials, and explosives. This position involves strenuous physical work, mostly out of doors.

  2. Must be prepared to work long hours, irregular schedules, holidays and weekends.

  3. Takes immediate action during wildfires, floods, slides, earthquakes and other natural disasters to protect the public and cooperates with other agencies as necessary.

  4. Performs all duties with due regard to personal safety and to the safety of other employees and to the public. Insures that less skilled personnel also comply with applicable safety and occupational health standards.

  5. Maintains good working relations and communication with other employees, district commissioners, other agencies and with the public. Establishes a public image that reflects favorably on district employees.

  6. Prepares in an accurate and detailed manner, all required paperwork.

  7. Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Extensive experience as a heavy equipment operator, particularly with equipment similar to that utilized by the AHD.

  2. Leadership abilities necessary to effectively direct the work of other employees.

  3. Demonstrates appropriate and safe operation of semi-heavy and heavy duty road and bridge maintenance equipment under a variety of working and weather conditions.

  4. Must have a current Idaho Class A CDL license with appropriate endorsements.

  5. Knowledge to perform minor maintenance of equipment and be able to work alone, often under adverse weather conditions.

  6. Initiative to carry out approved work plans effectively and efficiently.

  7. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with District Commissioners.

  9. Equivalent experience, education and training that demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

These duties describe the primary responsibilities of the job and are not to be considered descriptive of every duty of the senior equipment operator for the Atlanta Highway District.
