CHAPTER 8: SYLLOGISM

In almost all the competitive examination questions on syllogism or what in logic is called ‘Logical Deduction’ are asked. Syllogism is a part of academics curriculum on a subject called Logic which at a higher level becomes philosophy. Most of the students apply the process of Venn diagram for solving syllogism questions. While there is no harm in doing so but the risk is that if even 1 diagram is missed you will end up with wrong answer and secondly there is no way one can memorize the concept of Venn diagram but one can easily memorize the rules of syllogism and lastly in the event of complementary pair a small Ignorance can result in wrong answer but since there is a standard rules of syllogism for complementary pairs hence the chances of committing errors with the rules method is very minimal.

  • Any categorical statement is called proposition.

  • There are4 components of a proposition.

  • A. quantifier : the word all no and some ( as a thumb rule 1st term of the proposition)

  • B. subject : about which something is said ( as a thumb rule word which follows quantifier)

  • C. copula : the part which denotes relation between subject and predicate (as a thumb rule word in between subject and predicate)

  • D. predicate : the last part of the proposition

  • Structure of the proposition : Q+S+C+P (quantifier+ subject + copula + predicate)

  • 4 classifications of propositions:

  1. ALL: ALL S IS P

  2. NO : NO S IS P

  3. I: SOME S IS P

  4. O: SOME S IS NOT P.

  • Middle Term: the term common in both the proposition; and its structure should be ; predicate of first and subject of second. Eg: (I)all rackets are bats (II) all bats are hockey stick. Here bats is the middle term. If there is a common term however the same is not in prescribed order then first arrange that term in a prescribed order (p of first and s of second) as per the rules of the syllogism and then proceed. Please note that middle term does not find a place in the conclusion. If middle term exists in the conclusion then the same cannot follow.

  • Complementary pair: also known as the concept of either. Lets take an example there are 5 members in your family and some fruits were there in your fridge which some one has eaten in the night. One of the family members said that you have eaten some fruits and another member says that you have eaten no fruits. We are not sure who is correct but we can safely conclude that one of them is correct and both cannot be correct. There is no chance of both being wrong either you have eaten some fruit or you have not eaten any fruit. This is what we call in logic as concept of complementary pair or the case of either, where individually none of them follows from the given proposition but taken together one of them has to follow. If any one of the two directly follows then it cannot be the case of either irrespective of the structure or the order.

  • Contraposition: to obtain contraposition of a statement, first replace the subject and predicate term in the proposition and then exchange both these terms with their complement.

  • Eg: All birds are mammals. Its contraposition “All non-mammals are non-birds”

  • Some birds are Mammals. Its contraposition. ”Some non-mammals are non-birds”

  • Obversion: in Obversion we change the quality of the proposition and replace the predicate term by its complement. Four cases:

  1. (A) All birds are mammals----- No birds are Non-mammals.

  2. No poets are singers------All poets are Non-singers.

  3. Some nurses are doctors-----Some nurses are not non-doctors.

  4. Some politicians are not statesman----Some politicians are non-statesman.

  • Three combinations of complimentary pair

  1. A + O( ALL AND SOME NOT)

  2. I +O (SOME AND SOME NOT

  3. I + E (SOME AND NO)

  • Converse: taken from one statement in isolation. Apart from direct conclusion converse is also taken as a logical conclusion and the same is considered to be following from the given proposition.

  • Structure of converse:

  1. Converse of A is I. (All S is P then Converse will be some P is S)

  2. Converse of E is E. (No S is P then Converse will be No P is S)

  3. Converse Of I is I. (Some S is P then converse will be Some P is S)

  4. Converse of O. There is no converse of O.

  • Structure of conclusion :

  1. A + A=A

  2. A +E=E

  3. E + A=O* (KNOWN AS O REVERSE DENOTED BY THE SYMBOL O*)

  4. E + I=O*

  5. I +A=I

  6. I +E =O.

  • O* OR O REVERSE is the structure of some not (O) but the difference from O is than in O* “THE SUBJECT OF THECONCLUSION IS THEPREDICATE OF THE SECOND TERM AND THE PREDICATE OF THE CONCLUSIO IS THE SUBJECT OF THE FIRST TERM” AND THE ORDER WILL BE SOME+NOT(O)

  • So to derive the final set of conclusions you have to check the following:

  1. Converse of the proposition.

  2. Converse of the converse of proposition.

  3. Direct conclusion.

  4. Converse of direct conclusion

  5. Set of complementary pairs (cases of either)

SOME IMOORTANT POINTS TOREMEMBER:

  1. THE ‘A’ CONCLUSION IS ONLY POSSIBLE WHEN BOTHE THE STATEMENTS BEGINS WITH ‘A’ AND IN THE STANDARD FORMAT, I.E MIDDLE TERM PROPERLY DISTRIBUTED.

  1. IF BOTH THE STATEMENTS BENS WITH ‘I’ THEN ONLY LOOK FOR CONVERSE SINCE, ‘I’ +’I’ GIVES NO CONCLUSION. IF BOTH BEGINS WITH ‘I’ ONLY LOOK FOR ‘I’ IN THE ANSWER CHOICES.

  1. IF BOTH THE STATEMENTS BENS WITH ‘E’ THEN ONLY LOOK FOR CONVERSE SINCE, ‘E’ +’E’ GIVES NO CONCLUSION. IF BOTH BEGINS WITH ‘E’ ONLY LOOK FOR ‘E’ IN THE ANSWER CHOICES.

  1. IF ONE OF THE STATEMENTS BEGINS WITH ‘O’ ONLY LOOK FOR THE CONVERSE OF THE OTHER, SINCE ANY COBINATION WITH ‘O’ GIVES NO CONCLUSION

  1. IF BOTH BOGINS WITH ‘O’ THEN THERE WILL BE NO CONCLUSION AND MO CONVERSE, SINCE ‘O’ + ‘O’ GIVES NO CONCLUSION AND THERE IS NO CONVERSE OF ‘O’

  1. BE VERY CAREFUL WHILE ANSWERING THERE MAY BE A POSSIBILITY THAT YOU DON’T FIND A MIDDLE TERM SINCE IT IS NOT PROPERLY DISTRIBUTED. LOOK FOR A TERM WHICH IS PRESENT IN BOTH THE STATEMENTS AND SEE IF YOU CAN ARRANGE IT.

  1. ARRANGEMENTS BECOMES IMPORTANT, LET US TAKE A CASE WHERE YOU FIND A FIRST STATEMENT OF ‘A’ TYPE AND SECOND OF ‘I’ TYPE. YOU WILL CONCLUDE THAT ‘A’ + ‘I’ GIVES NO CONCLUSION, WAIT ON AND LOOK FOR ARRAGEMENT SEE IF YOU SHIFT THE ‘I’ TYPE IN THE FIRST AND ‘A’ TYPE IN THE SECOND THEN ‘I’ + ‘A’ GIVES ‘I’,SO ALWAYS LOOK FOR ALL POSSIBLE ARRANGEMENTS.

  1. MOST IMPORTANT DON’T CONCLUDE UNLESS YOU HAVE CHECKED THE CASES OF EITHER ‘A O’ ‘I O’ ‘IE’. TWO SUCH STATEMENTS ARE PRESENT AND NONE OF THEM DIRECTLY FOLLOWS THAN IN THAT CASE ONE OF THE TWO HAS TO FOLLOW.

  1. LOOK FOR THE ANSWER CHOICES PROPERLY BEFORE MARKING THE FINAL ANSWRS.
