Italy MT Imports of Salted Cod Fillets (Market Year July-June) (Data source 2)
The above graph breaks down Italian imports of salted cod fillets between Atlantic cod, Pacific cod and other Gadidae (mostly northern Atlantic gadus other than morhua). As with frozen fillets, we expect Pacific cod’s share of this market to grow as Atlantic cod loses its price advantage to Pacific cod, and buyers can afford to buy the whiter, thicker Pacific cod consumers prefer.
Unlike in Spain, fresh cod fillets have been a popular seafood item in Italy for a number of years. The market for fresh cod in Italy is more mature than in Spain and Portugal and has not reacted to low Norwegian prices to the extent Spain and Portugal have.

Alaska Pollock: In December 2010, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture published a decree modifying the legal commercial names for seafood products in Italy. Among the modifications was Alaska pollock which could now be labeled “merluzzo d’Alaska” as well as the previously accepted “pollock d’Alaska.” Merluzzo is the same term used to label cod (merluzzo nordico) and hake (merluzzo) and other whitefish in Italy, and this labeling modification allowed many supermarkets and institutional kitchens to reference and serve Alaska pollock in their operations. So far, this has tripled the market for Alaska pollock in Italy. With rising cod prices, we expect market growth to continue.

Country Focus: PORTUGAL - Population: 10.46 million (2013)

Portugal is far and away the world’s leading importer, producer and consumer of salted cod. Portugal imports about 60,000 MT/yr of frozen H&G Atlantic and Pacific cod for salting, and another 50,000 MT/yr of wet and dry salted cod. Most of this product is consumed in Portugal.

Portugal MT Imports of Frozen vs Salted Cod (Market Year July-June) (Data source 2)
Imports of salted cod have remained fairly stable for the past five years. Growing domestic and export demand was been met by an increase in production by Portugal’s salt cod processors whose imports of frozen H&G cod hit an all-time record 58,700 MT in 2013-14, then dropping to 50,284 MT in 2014-15 in response to weaker demand from Brazil.
Portuguese exports of salt cod hit a record 15,237 MT in 2013-14 thanks to strong demand from Brazil as well as from Portugal’s other traditional markets in Angola, France and Spain. Exports dropped to 11,500 MT in 2014-15 as Brazil began entered into an economic downturn.
