Pause for Drinks and a Snack at Restaurant l’Omaha

Restaurant l’Omaha

Rue du 116eme Regiment USA, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer,

(0)2-31-22-41-46

From the D-Day Monument it will be a short walk to l’Omaha Restaurant for a drink and snack at an outdoor table before you call a taxi to take you “home” to Bayeux. Walk away from the beach for 2 minutes, turning right on rue du 116eme Regiment USA.

Pause here for a well-needed break to enjoy the wonderful view from the terrace, and to process all you have seen and experienced today. The local cider served here is made right up the road, and is very good.

Taxi Back to Peaceful Bayeux

Call a taxi to pick you up at Restaurant l’Omaha for the 12-mile drive back to peaceful Bayeux. Make an effort to engage your driver in conversation on the way. He may have an interesting viewpoint, or even family memories and stories, to add to your day.

After such an intense day, make it a point to treat yourself to some lounging time, and maybe a walk along the river, during your free time before dinner.

Dinner at La Rapiere in Old Town

You have reservations for a relaxing dinner at La Rapiere on the pedestrian street (53 rue St. Jean (0)2-31-21-05-45), or at the less expensive Au Petit Bistrot (31 Ter Rue Larcher (0)2-31-92-30-08).

La Rapiere is an atmospheric restaurant that is housed in a late-1400s mansion, with stone walls and large wooden beams. It specializes in Norman cuisine such as terrines, duck, and veal with Camembert. There are three fixed-price menus (€29–€52), as well as a la carte options. The food is excellent, and worth the splurge.

At the lower cost option, Au Petit Bistrot the Menus start at €23.

Day 11 (Tuesday):
Caen Memorial Museum

Before You Set Off for the Day:

Make lunch reservations for 12:30 pm at La Terrasse Restaurant at the Memorial Museum. (0)2-31-06-06-00.

Make dinner reservations for 7:30 or 8:00 pm in Bayeux at: Le Conquerant (38–40 rue de Nesmond; (0)2-31-10-36-02) OR Le Volet qui Penche, along the river (3 Passage de L'islet; (0)2-31-21-98-54).

Today will be another intense day, starting with the brief train ride to Caen. Much of the day will be devoted to the thoughtfully arranged Caen Normandy Memorial Center for History and Peace, built on top of the underground headquarters of General Richter, commander of the 716th German infantry division. Here you will “enter” history, and come to understand it in a whole new light.

After 3–4 intense hours in the Memorial Museum, “experiencing” the devastation and suffering of invasion, occupation, and eventual liberation, with a pause midway for lunch and a walk in the Memory Gardens, you will take the bus back to the 11th century, to spend more time in the Vaugueux district you visited two days ago.

Or you may opt to take an earlier train “home” to Bayeux to visit the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, the Museum of Art & History, or the Lace Museum, or to stop by a shop that has caught your eye during your time in Bayeux.
