Day 8 (Saturday):
To Bayeux in Normandy

Before You Set Off for the Day: Call your next hotel to confirm your arrival. Ask that they make 12:30 lunch reservations for you at La Fringale, (43 rue St. Jean; (0)2-31-21-34-40), at an outdoor table. Also request that they make your dinner reservations for 7:30 or 8:00 pm at La Reine Mathilde Brasserie, on the terrace, with a view of Bayeux Cathedral (23 rue Laracher; (0)2 31 92 08 13).

TIME TARGET (confirm these times):

7:30 am hotel check-out and walk to bus stop.

8:45 am bus to the train station.

9:16 am train to Bayeux.

Bayeux and the D-Day Landings

While William crossed to conquer, the D-Day troops crossed to liberate. On June 6th, 1944, a force ten times the size of William’s, totaling 160,000 American, British and Canadian troops, crossed the English Channel, this time in the opposite direction, from England to France, to liberate France and Western Europe from Nazi control.

Bayeux had a key role in both the 11th and 20th century stories. Bayeux is where William and his troops constructed the fleet to transport French troops to England. And Bayeux was the first city to be reclaimed by the Allies on the day after D-Day, June 7, 1944. Unlike the other towns and cities near the Normandy coast, Bayeux was recaptured without being subjected to bombing, and thus emerged from the war virtually undamaged.

Leaving the Mont

Today you will need to be up and away right on schedule, and with great focus on achieving your goal of catching the morning train to get yourself to Bayeux in time for lunch. You have a 9:16 am train to catch from the little station in Pontorson (be sure that you have confirmed this time after making your own reservations).

It is essential that you check the current train schedule for updated train time from Pontorson to Bayeux. Train schedules change frequently. And YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS TRAIN.

But first, in order to get to your train, you will need to run the gauntlet that brought you onto the Mont two days ago, this time in reverse. It is crucial that you make your train with time to spare. This is why you will be starting early to allow plenty of time. Since you will be traveling between two small stations, Pontorson and Bayeux, there will be very few trains. If you miss the morning train, you will have many hours to wait before the afternoon train at 5:37 pm.

These are the five tasks ahead of you as you leave the Mont:

  1. Check out of your hotel at around 7:30 am..

  2. As you wind your way back down the Grand Rue, pick up breakfast sandwiches and drinks to eat on the train.

  3. Walk out through the gates to the bus drop-off point. You will be traveling against the crowd, so allow time accordingly.

  4. Aim to be near the front of the line for the first bus, leaving the Mont at 8:45 am, and arriving at the Pontorson train station at 9:03 am, just in time for the 9:16 am train.

  5. Catch the 9:16 am train (confirm your own train time).
