Minutes The Committee reviewed the minutes from the September 10, 2012, meeting. All minutes are posted to http://www.sdccdonline.net/handbook/minutes.htm.
Updates from the Colleges and Continuing Education and other DE News Andrea introduced new Committee member, Michelle Fischthal, Dean for Continuing Education’s Business and Information Technology department. Michelle joins Continuing Education from her previous position at District IT where she served as Student Services Technical Analyst for the San Diego Community College District for over seven years.
Gwyn reported that she is in the process of notifying City College instructors who have been nominated to participate in the upcoming Online Faculty Showcase. She was pleased to announce that City College will have good representation at the showcase. Gwyn informed the group that she holds her face-to-face faculty hours at CitySITE on Thursdays from noon-3 p.m. to take advantage of Katie’s oncampus hours. She is interested in oncampus instructional support during Katie’s planned leave of absence.
Andrea congratulated Sandra on receiving her certification after completing the SDCCD Online Faculty Training and Certification Program. Sandra said that during the City College Academic Senate meeting some faculty were concerned that Blackboard was charging a fee ($1.99/year or $5.99/lifetime) for the Blackboard Mobile Learn app. Dave explained that the app is an optional service for the user’s convenience. Although the Blackboard Mobile app was previously free, it was limited to WiFi access on IOS devices and Android on Sprint networks only. The new charges by Blackboard are to cover the improved service on all devices.
Rechelle said that she has been helping to plan the upcoming Online Faculty Showcase which will be hosted at Miramar College LLRC’s High Tech Center, Room L102. Miramar College has three instructors that have been nominated to participate in the showcase. Rechelle has also been preparing for an accreditation visit scheduled for Miramar College the first week of November.
Internships.com Demonstration Johnny Giangregorio of Internships.com held an online demonstration for the Committee. Internships.com, which integrates through a Building Block on Blackboard, hosts an online portal for companies to post available internship and job positions. Students can search and apply for positions on the site which could boost colleges' intern and job placement programs. There are ten community colleges in California, including Southwestern College, who currently use Internships.com. The Committee found that the site did not appear to be accessible to students with visual impairments, an ADA requirement. Andrea will follow up with Southwestern College to discuss how they use Internships.com to benefit their institution. Karen asked if JobConnect, the District’s Student Employment System, could be prominently offered to Blackboard users. More information on JobConnect can be found at http://jobconnect.sdccd.edu/. Alison offered to check with Mesa’s Career and Transfer Center to see if they have an interest in a relationship with Internships.com.
OER Bills Andrea reviewed a Senate Bill introduced by Senate President pro tem Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), SB 1052, that provides for the selection, development and administration of free open digital textbooks for the most popular lower-division courses and overseen by the establishment of the "California Open Education Resources Council" (COERC). COERC, established by the legislation, will be comprised of faculty members from the University of California, California State University and Community Colleges to determine which courses merit inclusion. Its companion bill, SB 1053, creates the California Open Source Digital Library to house the open source textbooks and courseware.
Online Faculty Showcase – October 19 Open House 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. @ Miramar College LLRC High Tech Center Andrea and the Online Faculty Mentors have been planning the Online Faculty Showcase scheduled for October 19 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Miramar Colleges’ new LLRC High Tech Center Room L102. Joe shared his concern that there was not enough interest in the Showcase from Mesa College. Karen suggested that the Mesa faculty have become more seasoned and that the targeted attendees for future events might need more consideration. Andrea suggested the showcase would help to inform Department Chairs, Deans, and other campus administrators about online courses in addition to recognizing the great work of our faculty. Jane added that she may be adding one more CE instructor to the list of presenters.
Roundtable Angela shared her concerns that instructors who have completed certification in the Online Faculty Training and Certification Program will not have access to the updates provided in the new session of the program. Katie assured her that any instructor who has completed the program can contact SDOLP staff and request guest access. Angela was also concerned that instructors sometimes lose work when they compose directly into the Blackboard text editor instead of working offline and then copying/pasting into the Blackboard textbox. Angela would like to see the system have an AutoSave feature similar to Google Docs. Andrea recommended that Angela submit a Blackboard Enhancement Request. Dave will review SP10 when it is released later this fall to see if it includes AutoSave.
Joe shared that he submitted an application for a Gates Foundation Grant to develop a MOOC. Blackboard supported Joe's grant application by agreeing to host the MOOC on CourseSites. The SDCCD Online Learning Pathways team assisted Joe with his video for the grant application.
The Committee recommended that a discussion about MOOCs be continued at the next meeting. Andrea will show the TedTalk by Daphne Koller of Coursera at the next meeting.
Andrea briefly explained a new pilot project to develop a mobile instructional app with Roovy and the support of USD's Mobile Learning Center. Gwyn and Jane have contributed introductory course materials for the app prototype, SDCCD Course Previews, which Andrea is going to demonstrate to Vice Chancellor Lee next week.
Next Meeting: Monday, November 5, 12:00-1:30 p.m., Miramar College W-248
