Context
News and Knowledge (N&K) is the department within BBC Future Media responsible for the following BBC Online products: News, Sport, Weather, Knowledge & Learning, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC Homepage and Search. We manage and develop products on websites, mobile devices and interactive TV. We have a world-leading approach to content management and metadata, and we also delivered the London 2012 Olympics across BBC Online.
The department consists of software developers, project managers, product managers, business support staff, and works closely with designers and editorial staff. We use our knowledge and application of audience research, new and emerging technologies, combined with creativity and collaboration across the BBC’s content divisions, to deliver world class digital products and services which deliver reach, quality, impact, and value for the BBC.
Aims of the Job
Configuration specialists work closely with stakeholders and technical teams to analyse business requirements, to plan, build and maintain new websites and to help develop new components and functionality within a coherent development framework. They are responsible for a range of tasks utilising several specialist tools, advise and steer product development in line with existing capability, and are typically involved in the product development process from inception to launch. They collaborate with stakeholders and representatives of the BBC’s content divisions, as well as multi-disciplinary software delivery teams across Future Media.
Specifically, this role will focus on implementing the transition of 27 World Service websites into the content management system used by BBC News and Sport, as part of a strategic move towards responsive web design.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Work closely with Product Managers and stakeholders to understand and analyse the business requirements for products, projects and features
Ensure through advice/consultation that designs and concepts align with existing functionality wherever possible, in order to minimise development impact and maintain a consistent development framework
To configure the Content Publishing System (CPS) and related tools to build and update websites, sections and new web features
Work with delivery teams to plan, build and launch new index and story page components
To act as a bridge between editorial and technical stakeholders
Maintain configuration consistency across CPS environments (Int/Test/Staging/Live)
To help diagnose issues relating to incorrect configuration of the CPS systems
To advise and support editorial teams on the use and management of publishing and configuration tools
Identify opportunities for streamlining and improvements in configuration tools
Be comfortable communicating technical issues to the client in a way that makes the business impact clear. Communicate project issues so there is an understanding of the problem and options for solving it
Facilitate decision-making with stakeholders and the development team, to include conversations about scope, the detail of individual requirements and bigger picture approaches to the solution, and about providing clear options
Essential Skills
Knowledge of HTML
Strong understanding of Windows Operating System
Understanding of web site concepts and terminologies

Essential Experience
Business analysis with a focus on requirements gathering and documentation.
Previous experience of working in fast-paced environments with tight release deadlines.
Experience of presenting effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including oral and written presentations, proposals, specifications and reports.
Experience of working on online application projects and with relevant technologies.
Evidence of problem solving ability and of providing creative solutions.

A strong interest in BBC Online products and content output
Experience in the application of UML techniques
Experience in and knowledge of transactional websites, data-driven web publishing, Web 2.0, social networking and community sites and technologies, audio and video streaming, mobile products and devices, content management systems, interactive TV and broadcast systems.
Working knowledge of BBC output; editorial, compliance, and regulatory issues for the BBC.
An understanding of the BBC’s internet infrastructure and particularly the CPS content management system would be an advantage.
