International Summer Program
The 21st Century Center of Excellence (COE) Program, University of the Ryukyus, provides an international summer program to approximately ten international students for two months every year. Studies are focused on the biodiversity of coral reef and island ecosystems. Preeminent researchers are invited to give lectures on diverse approaches to biodiversity. The students can gain research experience through experiments and field investigations in cooperation with the lecturers.
Focus of the Summer Program in 2007:
The aim of the 2007 summer program is to promote better understandings about population dynamics, reproduction, development and symbiosis of corals. Students will learn the above topics through lectures given by internationally recognized coral researchers and get hand-on experiences through working with them.
Each student will participate in one of the following projects. In each project, there will be 3-4 teams, which will study independent but related subjects. Participants will try to prepare manuscripts based on the results obtained during the summer program.
1. Population dynamics and reproductive ecology of corals
(1) Population dynamics of Fungiid corals
(2) Reproduction of Fungiid corals
(3) Community structure and species diversity of corals on the Sesoko reef moat
Coordinator: Dr. Kazuhiko Sakai, TBRC, University of the Ryukyus, Japan
Invited lecturers
Prof. Yossi Loya, Tel-Aviv University, Israel
Prof. Andrew Heyward, AIMS-WA, Australia
Prof. Robert van Woesik, Florida Tech, USA
2. Reproduction and symbiotic biology of corals
(1) Development and establishment of symbiosis in corals
(2) Cost and benefits of symbiosis for larval dispersal
(3) Establishment of zooxanthellae cultures and their characterization
(4) Related subjects proposed by applicants
Coordinator: Prof. Michio Hidaka, University of the Ryukyus, Japan
Invited lecturers
Prof. Robert A. Kinzie III, University of Hawaii, USA
Prof. Robert H. Richmond, PBRC, University of Hawaii, USA
