Курс I, заочная форма получения образования
Разработали:

2016
I. Пояснительная записка

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
1. The board of directors of a limited company is primarily responsible for determining the objectives and policies of a business. It is the directors who determine the direction the business is going to take. They will need to ensure that the necessary funds are available and will appoint key staff to whom they will delegate the authority to run the business on a day-to-day basis. They will need to design an effective organization structure so that there is both a chain of command linking one level of management with another and an effective communication network so that instructions can be passed downward and information passed upward.
2. The directors are appointed by the shareholders, normally at the company's annual general meeting, at which the chairman of the board will be expected to account for their stewardship the previous year. The company's accounts will be presented to the shareholders at that time so they can judge for themselves whether or not the board has been successful.
3. Direction in business is like strategy in war situation. The strategic decisions determine the areas in which the company's resources will be employed. Above all it involves planning to ensure that the business first survives and then flourishes. Strategic decisions, made by the board of directors, are concerned with the disposition of resources. These contrast with the tactical decisions by means of which the senior executives (appointed by the directors) carry out in detail the plans conceived or approved by the board of directors.
4. The fact that boards of directors tend to meet rather infrequently, say once a week, means that part-time directors can be elected to the board. Since they will not have departmental responsibilities within the company they are often described as non-executive directors. There are arguments in favour of such directors though they may lack a detailed knowledge of the company's activities. They may bring expertise to the board. Some are lawyers, or experts in tax affairs. Some represent influential groups of shareholders whose support is necessary if the board is going to carry out its plans, while others are directors in a number of companies and are used to interlock boards within a group of companies. For example, a holding (or parent) company may appoint a director from their board to serve on the board of a subsidiary company, with a view to keeping a watching brief on the directors' activities.

A Career in Business
Many office workers dream of working their way up to the top from messenger to president of the corporation. The way lies through middle management positions. Middle management includes junior executives, who may recommend action to management or see the company’s policies for their companies, especially those that involve finances. The top managers of the large corporations have a great deal of power and influence.
It is still possible to start out at the bottom and go all the way to the top. Because the financial operation of business is so important, some accountants become top executives. In companies where technology is important, people with engineering background can also rise to the top. Nowadays, however, education plays a central role in the selection of men and women for management jobs. Many US universities have courses in business administration. The graduates of these courses often start out in middle management jobs. From there they can easily be promoted if they show the necessary personality and ability.

World Exhibition
The first world industrial exhibition was held in London in 1851. It was a great success. It displayed exhibits of 40 participating nations and the number of visitors reached over 6 million.
Since then world industrial exhibitions have had a colourful history. Many such events have been held, some of them on a large scale. They have changed not only in size and scale, but also in character and overall purpose. Such events provided opportunities for exchanging scientific, technological and cultural achievements of the people of Europe, America, Australia, Asia and Africa. Beginning with the early 60s, international expositions began to take new forms, trying to emphasize not only technological progress, but also other aspects of life. They became festivals of industry and culture.
In our country international specialized exhibitions are organized by different trade fair organizing firms. The companies organize international specialized exhibitions, presentations, seminars, training programmes, Industrial Trade Fairs, etc. The events cover all sectors influencing the national economy including agriculture, machine tool construction, metal working and woodworking, national construction and food industry. Such fairs and exhibitions provide an opportunity to establish profitable contacts and promote mutual understanding among different nations.

Going Trough the Customs
Customs’ regulations are on the whole similar in any country of the world and a businessman should know them.
When you get off the plane you go through passport control, where an immigration officer asks you to show your passport. He asks you about the purpose of your visit to the country and the length of you stay there. You may answer that you have arrived on a business trip for a week. If you passport is in order you go through the customs.
It is not difficult to get through the customs but you’ll have to fill in an entry form (customs declaration form). The customs officer inspects your bags (luggage) and asks if you have things liable to duty, any presents, and things for your personal use or money about you. He may inform you about what items are liable to duty and what things you may have duty free. As a rule personal things may be brought in duty free. The customs officer also asks you to put your suit-cases (your luggage) on the scales, and if there’s some extra weight you’ll have to pay extra taxes.
Two special signs are sometimes used to show passengers which way to go through the customs hall: “Nothing to declare’’ and “Goods to declare”. In some countries they have the system of red and green doors. If the visitor has nothing to declare he walks through the green door, if he has goods to declare – through the red one.
In some cases the customs inspector may ask you to open your bags for inspection. It sometimes happens that a passenger’s luggage is carefully gone through (examined) in order to prevent smuggling. After you are through with all customs formalities the inspector will put a stamp on each piece of your luggage and wish you to have a good stay in the country.

Making Purchases
When on a business trip abroad I often go shopping. I need to make some purchases before leaving the country because I want to buy presents for my wife and children.
I prefer supermarkets for shopping. They have become very popular with the shoppers because you can buy everything you need under one roof and they are self- service shops and have parking possibility. I can also make a purchase at clothes shops, shoe shops, book shops, etc. But I call at a department store as it has many departments and I can buy everything I need in one building. I don’t like expensive department stores are open every day till 7 o’clock. Almost all the shops are closed on Sundays.
I ask the nearest way to the Central Department Store and get there by bus. It takes me 10 minutes. A lot of people move along the counters of the shop and look at the shop- windows choosing what they need. I’d like to buy a suit for me, a pair of gloves for my wife and some toys for my children. There’s a very good choice of ready- made clothes at the men’s and women’s departments of the store. I ask the shop- assistant (the sales- girl) to help me choose a summer suit of the right size for everyday (office, better) wear. I try on a few suits in the fitting room. The suit I choose fits me perfectly, it is in grey and matches my eyes, it’s not expensive. At least, it costs no more than I can spend. I’m sure that it’s my style and it’ll wear for ages. I pay for the suit in cash. The cashier gives me a change. I also buy a pair of nice gloves at the women’s department for my wife. If the gloves are tight, I’ll get a refund. And the toys I buy for my children will be a good present and make them happy.

So you want to be a mail order entrepreneur?
Mail order makes shopping easier – for the customer that is. It is possible to buy flowers, furniture, books, chocolates and many other products by post. The company sends customers a catalogue, and they can choose products without leaving their home. Johnny Boden is the chairman of the mail order clothing company Boden. He says that mail order companies ‘process the customer’s order, get the item from the warehouse, check the colour, size, etc., deliver it to their homes and arrange returns if necessary’. In shops the customer does all these things.
Is it easy to be a mail order entrepreneur? The disadvantage is that the start-up costs are high. You need stock to sell and computers to process orders. You also need a lot of employees. However, mail order does have advantages. A mail order company can operate from almost any place. Charlie and Caroline Gladstone moved from London to Scotland and started Pedlars clothing company. Mr. and Mrs. Gladstone wanted to work from home. They wanted a better quality of life and to operate from a low-cost location. Mr. Gladstone and Mr. Boden visited the US separately. They saw that mail order was a popular business with good customer service. Mr. Gladstone believes that customer loyalty is important. A successful mail order company provides a personal experience, like a good shop.

Agriculture in Britain
Great Britain is an industrial country. But agriculture is also well-developed. Four fifth of the land is devoted to agriculture. About one million people work on farms. Britain produces nearly two-thirds of its total food requirements. It is self-sufficient in milk, eggs, meat, potatoes and wheat.
The climate of Great Britain and soils are not very favourable for the development of agriculture. It is developing thanks to modern technology and scientific research. The most productive area is Lowland Britain.
Wheat growing in confined mainly to England. Barley and oats are grown in the same areas together with sugar beet. More than half the crop is harvested mechanically. Potatoes are grown mainly in the east of England and in Lancashire, while Scotland supplies seed-potatoes.
Dairy farming is distributed all over the country but is characteristic of the west of England.
Britain is an exporter of pedigree cattle, sheep, pigs and horses. Sheep are found in hilly counties particularly. Britain has been famous for its wool for centuries. There is hardly a place in the country which hasn`t got some connection with the wool trade. Many surnames show a family`s past connection with the wool trade. Shepherd and Weaver are the best examples.
Britain’s second major source of food is the surrounding sea (the fishing industry).
At present most farms in Britain are large, commercial farms. There are a number of traditional family farms, but they are not characteristics.
Market gardening centres are usually situated near the big towns. Glasshouses are found mainly in southern England.

Careers: Economist
1. Economists study the ways in which individuals and society choose to use limited resources, such as natural resources, labor, factories, and machines, in an effort to satisfy unlimited wants. They are concerned with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services and are interested in helping society get as much satisfaction as possible from its limited resources. Economists collect, process, and analyze data to determine the costs and benefits of using resources in various ways.
2. Economists are employed in a number of different job settings. About half of them are academic economists, who engage in teaching, writing and doing research in colleges, and Universities. They also write textbooks and journal articles, develop and test new theoretical models, provide consulting services to governments and businesses, and engage in variety of other professional activities. The other half of all economists work for government or business.
3. Government economists collect and analyze information about economic conditions in the nation and possible changes in government economic policies. Much of this information is published in government bulletins and reports. Often the government economist wears a second hat as a policy analyst. Economists forecast tax revenues and interest rates, analyze, who gains and who loses from particular changes, monitor prices, compute total output and perform other useful tasks in the public sector.
4. Business economists work for banks, insurance companies, investment companies, manufacturing firms, economic research firms, and management consulting firms.
5. Some economists operate their own economic businesses. They are called entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are a mystery to some people, especially those who are only comfortable with a nine-to-five existence and assured weekly paychecks and fringe benefits. The entrepreneur is a business person who prefers to take calculated risks in order to be his or her own boss. An individual hoping to start up a new company needs to have entrepreneurial flair or talent, as well as good technical skills and financial skills, because they make a profit through risk taking or initiative. They are self-employed, and often work long hours for less pay than they would if they were an employee of another company.

What is a Manager?
A number of different terms are used for ‘” manager’’ including “director’’, “administrator” and the “president”. The term ‘’ manager ‘’ is used more frequently in profit –making organizations, while the others are used more widely in government and non-profit organizations such as universities, hospitals and social work agencies.
What, then, is a manager? When used collectively the term “management” refers to those people who are responsible for carrying out decisions within a system. They directly supervise people in an organisation. A manager sets objectives and decides what has to be done to reach these objectives. He make the objectives effective by communicating them to people that are responsible for various jobs.
Almost everything a manager does involve decisions. In decision- making there is always some uncertainty and risk. Decision- making is the act of selecting a preferred course of action among alternatives, the act of decision- making enters into almost all of manager’s activities. Managers must reach decisions about objectives and plans for their organizational units. They must decide how to direct, how to organize, and how to control.
Making and implementing decisions are crucial parts of management. Management attempts to improve the decision- making process. The success of business and non-profit organizations depends on their ability to make good decisions and to implement their decisions well.
