Pronouns:
a word that takes the place of a person, place, thing, or idea
personal: a pronoun that refers to a the person or thing that is speaking, spoken to, or spoken about
nominative: a pronoun that completes the action - I, you, he, she, we, they, it

Pronouns in Writing: The following paragraph is hard to read because there are no pronouns. Rewrite the paragraph replacing some of nouns with pronouns. Remember to check for agreement and don’t get rid of all the nouns.
The Green Lantern ring finally arrived in the mail. Jerry grabbed the package that held the Green Lantern ring while Jerry’s friends, Luke, Ann, and Grant looked on eagerly. Sally, Jerry’s little sister was over in the corner, unable to watch, but Sally kept jumping up and down saying “Sally wants to see the Green Lantern ring. Sally wants to see the Green Lantern ring.” Jerry’s hands shook as Jerry opened the package. Jerry, Jerry’s friends, and Jerry’s sister all held Jerry’s, Jerry’s friends’, and Jerry’s sister’s breath while Jerry pulled the Green Lantern ring out of the package. Jerry placed the Green Lantern ring on Jerry’s finger, raised Jerry’s fist up in the air, and placed Jerry’s other hand on Jerry’s waist. Jerry’s friends and Jerry’s sister clapped and cheered for Jerry. Jerry’s sister, Sally, said “Finally the hero that Luke, Ann, Grant, and Sally have been waiting for has arrived!”

Pronoun – Antecedent
A pronoun takes the place of a noun. The pronoun needs to agree with the noun it replaces. It needs to agree in number, gender, and case. When it is plural use they or them.

A. Use the pronouons above to complete the following sentences.
1. My whole family thinks should all go to Disneyland together.

B. Underline the pronoun and draw an arrow to the antecedent. Sometimes the antecedent is not written, but understood. If the antecedent is is not in the sentence, write the antecedent in parenthesis.
Example: She lost her glass slipper at the ball. (Cinderella)

Pronouns: For each picture write a sentence that contains a pronoun and its antecedent. If you need to write a second sentence that contains the antecedent. Underline the pronoun and draw an arrow to the antecedent.

Nominative case: Nominative pronouns are most often used as the subject of a sentence. The subject is the who or what that is doing something in the sentence.
first person – I, we second person: you
third person – he, she, it, they
Objective case: Objective pronouns are most often used as direct object (the whom or what recieves the action of the verb), indirect object (to whom or for whom the action was done), or objects of preposition.
first person – me, us second person: you
Notice that you and it are both nominative and objective.
third person – him, her, it, them
A. Read the sentences. Circle the correct pronoun. Write N for nominative or O for objective next to the number.

Possessive case: Possessive pronouns are used to show ownership or possession. Possessive pronouns do not use apostrophes.

These possessive pronouns are used as subjects or objects.

third person – his, hers, its, theirs
Possessive Pronouns used as Adjectives
These possessive adjectives modify and are always used with nouns.
first person – my, our second person: your
Notice that his and its both used as a noun or adjective.
third person – his, her, its, their
