Our Goal

To discuss Autonomic Computing (AC) from a C-level ‘thought leadership’ perspective, solicit feedback on the AC initiative, hold a dialog on the expected business value to the business and explore the technology challenges facing technology leaders. This will enable IBM to successfully lead the industry in the strategy and customer adoption of Autonomic Computing in a way that it generates the most business value for customers.

Why Autonomic Computing?

The information technology industry loves to prove the impossible possible. We obliterate barriers and set records with astonishing regularity ...but now we face a problem springing from the very core of our success and too few of us are focused on solving it. More than any other IT problem, this one, if it remains unsolved, will actually prevent us from moving to the next era of computing. The obstacle is complexity. Dealing with it is the single most important challenge facing the IT industry.”

Paul Horn, Sr. VP of Research for IBM, October, 2001
How we are connecting with the CIO/CTO Community

Through CIO/CTO Roundtables and 1:1 meetings which create opportunities for prominent US IT executives to participate with IBM in a unique thought leadership exercise focused on the problem of IT complexity.

These open and candid sessions provide a top-level forum to share vision, goals and ideas to co-create an industry-wide, compelling, game-changing initiative focused on driving significant business value.

Sample Comments

“I think it was very efficient, I learned some things and even my natural skepticism faded”

“I did like the overall agenda and venue very much.  For me, the opportunity to interact with several senior IT leaders and IBM executives in a small group setting was excellent”

“Well facilitated Session, Good to focus on enterprise pain points and use that to draw out the key value prop of autonomic”

“It was certainly a worthwhile event -- it clarified my understanding of the Autonomic Computing concept, and it provided a better basis for me to consider how such approaches might help me to meet my objectives for Bayer Research. I also compliment you on the very interesting group of executives which participated and also on the impeccable restaurant selection.”

“This (CIO Roundtable) is one of the smartest things your company has ever done”

“It was good for IBM to engage our brains not our wallets”

Autonomic Computing – What Issues are discussed?

CIO Priority Issues Discussed

  • Ensuring that business and IT strategies perfectly align such that delivery matches senior management’s expectations

  • Ensuring that IT governance policies and processes are working

  • Re-orienting IT staff to be more business aware and focused to yield the best IT service possible to support the business

  • Making relations work with outsourcing partners

  • Ensuring IT systems can decrease time-to-market for business users and increase cost efficiency within IT by reducing or managing complexity

  • Providing more holistic propositions from IT towards the business by being more solutions oriented with a more corporate perspective

  • Adding more value through a consolidation of IT development, operations and maintenance, thereby supporting the business

How is the AC Team Responding to these Issues?

Need to insert actions / initiatives for example:

    • Undertaking Proof of Concepts with organizations

    • Setting up Technical User Groups

    • Being more explicit regarding business value generated
