1.1 NASLIN
8th NASLIN Conference, Nike Campus, Beaverton, Oregon,
August 10-11, 2001
Planning is underway for the next conference of NASLIN. Under the leadership of the local organizers, Cindy Romaine, Librarian at Nike (email: cindy.romaine@nike.com) and Henriette Heiny, Director of the University of Oregon’s International Institute for Sport & Human Performance (email: hheiny@oregon.uoregon.edu) all kinds of exciting activities are planned which take advantage of this excellent location in northwestern US. Nike has recently added new buildings to the campus and has state of the art meeting rooms and eating facilities for conferences. There are motels within a mile and a half of the Nike Campus and we have tentatively booked the Hilton Motel as our conference accommodation, with the less expensive Fairfield Motel available next door.
The social part of the conference includes dinner on the Nike patio overlooking the lake, a trip to the Nike Techno Store and, hopefully, a wine tasting and banquet at a local winery.
.Henriette has established a conference website at:
http://www.uoregon.edu/~naslin/. Please note that the website has many sections listed, e.g. accommodation, program, registration, however not all parts are activated as yet. The website will be updated regularly as planning decisions are made. So start thinking about your plans for the summer of 2001. We have some exciting sessions in mind. This is the first time we have held our conference in the summer and hope that NASLIN members will combine summer holidays and this conference on the beautiful campus of Nike. We have included links to the Oregon Tourist and Convention Bureau to assist with vacation/conference planning.
Membership in NASLIN
At the NASLIN Steering Committee meeting in Lake Placid Oct. 26, 1999, committee members established a membership fee structure. The following letter from our Treasurer and the Chair is for NASLINE readers to consider:
Dear NASLIN Members,
“Unlike the Tennessee Williams character, NASLIN has not had to depend on the kindness of strangers. But, over the first decade of our existence, we have depended upon the kindness of friends. Our efforts to keep our conference registration fees low have often been supported by the institutions that have hosted our conferences and by special friends like the Sport Information Resource Centre and the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles.
NASLIN’s Steering Committee, meeting in Lake Placid last October, decided that it is time for a change, time to ask others to share, in a small but meaningful way, the expenses we incur as we produce our conferences. To this end, the steering committee adopted the following membership fee structure:
Individual Member $0
Fellowship Member $25 per year
Institutional Sponsor $100 per year
Patron $200 per year
All members will receive issue of NASLINE, our newsletter, and recognition for supporting the organization. Institutional Sponsors and Patrons will be acknowledged at NASLIN conferences. Patrons will be listed in each issue of NASLINE.
As you can see, there is no fee for Individual Membership. The Steering Committee affirmed its belief that individual membership should be open to all, unconditionally. Individuals who wish to support the organization personally may opt for a Fellowship Membership, but here is no requirement to do so. In addition, we would ask those of you who can to consider having your institution support us at the Institutional or Patron level.
NASLIN is committed to meeting every year and a half with our next conference at the Nike campus in Beaverton Oregon, Aug. 10-11, 2001. A successful membership campaign for the 2000/2001 academic year will ensure that the registration fee for that conference and for those that follow will be reasonable and affordable.
Thank you for your support.
Please make checks payable to NASLIN and send to the NASLIN Treasurer, Steve Gietschier, The Sporting News, PO Box 56, St. Louis, MO 63166 and include the usual information: Name, Business name and address, Tel., Fax, Email address.”
