Welcome back to school, Seniors!

YOUTH OF THE MONTH PROGRAM - Sponsored by the Exchange Club of Columbus, this program seeks to recognize outstanding students in all of the high schools in the MCSD. Any student may apply for this recognition. Applicants are judged on scholarship, leadership, service, and achievement. Additionally, applicants must compose an essay from 800 to 1200 words on the topic “Parading the Spirit of Community Service with Passion and Commitment” (This is the NAME of your essay – not a variation of this!!!!) SEE MRS. STRUNK FOR APPLICATIONS. Due back to Mrs. Strunk by Sept. 13!

(All meetings are held in the guidance conference room, unless noted on the door of the guidance office. Remember to sign up and get your pass at least 24 hours in advance of the visit!)

The Lovett College FairMonday, September 9 in Atlanta. The magnet office selects juniors and seniors to attend. If you are selected to attend, but are not interested in going or cannot attend, please let Mr. Hampton know ASAP so that someone else may go in your place!

Scholarships/Programs of Interest

National Association of Secondary School Principals 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards: Recognizes students who have distinguished themselves through volunteer work. Applications may be found at http://spirit.prudential.com or www.nassp.org/spirit. Complete this online form and submit it to Mrs. Strunk by November 1. One applicant will be selected to represent Columbus High in the program.
Discover Wellesley” – October 20 – 21 for seniors only, an overnight program that includes cultural events, class visits, etc. Register at www.wellesley.edu/admission/discover.

Additionally, 3 orientation sessions: September 21, October 14, and November 9. Registration opens September 4.


Colgate University Multicultural Open House – November 3 – 4. Apply at www.colgate.edu/openhouse. Deadline to register: September 30.
Brown University – an introduction to the university: Sunday, September 8 at 6 p.m.,

Pace Academy, Knights Hall, 966 West Paces Ferry Rd. NW, Atlanta, GA 30327. To register refer to www.brown.edu/go/brownnear you.


QuestBridge 2013 National College Match Program – connects high-achieving low-income students (households earn < $60,000 per year for family of 4) with admission and scholarships to some of the nation’s best colleges. Scholars should be academically strong, low-income students. Applications are available NOW at www.questbridge.org and are DUE SEPTEMBER 27.
Washington University in St. Louis – Danforth Scholars Program for students planning to attend Washington University who have exhibited service, leadership, academic excellence, and who have taken a rigorous selection of high school courses. Students must be nominated for the program. Interested seniors should see Mrs. Strunk by September 16.
Sewanee: The University of the South – “Discover Sewanee,” Nov. 10-11, by invitation ONLY. To apply for the event, complete the online application, as well as submit a high school transcript by October 1. Common Applications must be submitted by November 1, as well. The program is free for those selected.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Program – Students must have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Scholarships range from $5000 to $20,000. Apply online through October 25 at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.
Brenau University – President’s Day event February 17. Women’s Art and Design Exhibition, a competition open to young women in 10th-12th grades: offers $40,000 in scholarships and $1000 cash awards. To enter, students submit digitized images via email, then ship or deliver work to Brenau after notification of acceptance. Lunch provided. Registration available from Brenau in October.
Camp Magik – healing camp for bereaved children now accepting applications for fall 2013. Students who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or other close family member within the past 3 years may apply. Deadline for applications: September 25. Registration forms on website: www.campmagik.org, under “join us” tab.
SAT & ACT Study Tips – free sessions to be held at the Chattahoochee Valley Regional Library for approximately 2 hours each:

SAT dates:

September 7 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

November 9 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

December 28 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
ACT dates:

September 21 11 a.m. – 1

November 9 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Project Occupation – sponsored by Columbus State University, this leadership program will assist students in college applications, job skills, etc. The Gates Millennium Scholarship will be a scholarship for which students will be encouraged to complete.
