2016 ATTENDANCE BESTS
OPENING DAY: The Patriots are 10-8 all-time on Opening Day
RETURNING PLAYERS: This year’s 27 man roster features 9 players from last year’s Championship squad (Jon Hunton, Matt Fields, Scott Kelly, Mickey Storey, Kyler Newby, Gus Schlosser, David Vidal, Connor Little, Aharon Eggleston)
MLB EXPERIENCE: Eight players on the roster have at one point during their baseball tenure suited up for an MLB team (Jeremy Horst, Kyler Newby, Gus Schlosser, Mickey Storey, Eric Farris, Bryan LaHair, Brad Snyder, Trayvon Robinson)
STRIVE FOR SEVEN: The Somerset Patriots are the most successful baseball club in Atlantic League history winning League Championships in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2015. The Patriots look to win that elusive seventh title in program history this year. This is the 19th year of Somerset Patriots Baseball and they have qualified for the playoffs in 12 of those years.
HOME SWEET HOME: For the 5th time in the last six years the Patriots open up the baseball season at TD Bank Ballpark. Tonight Somerset will have a pregame ring ceremony and title banner unveiling in center field.
PLAYOFF SERIES REMATCH: In the 2015 Liberty Division Series Somerset outlasted Long Island 3-2 in a thrilling best-of-five series. The Patriots trailed 2-1 then received back-to-back complete game shutouts from Will Oliver and Roy Merritt to buoy them in the Championship Series.
CLOSING TIME: Jon Hunton has 128 career Atlantic League saves. Jim Ed Warden, formerly of Southern Maryland, holds the Atlantic League all-time record for career saves at 134.
JOVIAL JODIE: Brett Jodie is the reigning Atlantic League Manager of the Year. He has qualified for the playoffs in each of his three years at the helm. He boasts an all-time record of 264-154 (.631 winning percentage). He is one of two people in Atlantic League history to win a title as a player and as a manager with the other being Long Island’s Kevin Baez.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: For the first time since 2011 the Somerset Patriots will have a new Opening Day catcher. Adam Donachie had been the everyday backstop and had caught 21 of the 22 postseason games over the past three years.
JOINING THE GOOD GUYS: Carlos Guzman played 135 games for Camden last year and was an All-Star. In 24 games against Somerset he hit .310 with 2 HRs and 14 RBI.
