Overall Progress and Key Achievements


Provide an assessment of the composite project achievements (lead and partners contributions) since the last progress report. Detail the project key achievements during the reporting period. Highlight any exceptions and provide recommendations to Monitoring Officer/Contractor as necessary.

The SAPHE project has continued to make good progress in Q5. This has involved the completion of WPB1, kick off of WPB5 and good technical progress as the more technical workpackages move into substantial development stages. The following deliverables were completed in Q5: D06. “SAPHE prototype architecture analysis” workshops have been held, starting on 15 June 07, to define the end-to-end system, the first demo of which has been made on 31st July. This has resulted in good progress has been made on defining a greater level of specification for the end-to-end SAPHE system across the collaborating partners. There will be a continuing series of workshops addressing system wide issues at every quarterly meeting, and high level contacts between all partners will ensure that good progress is maintained in this vital area for the project.

The team at Imperial has focused particularly on research towards WPB5 which it is leading, in addition to the Body Sensing WPB3, and it is likely that these two WPs will be the primary focus of the Computing group working on the SAPHE project for the next 12 months. The Imperial team has also been heavily involved with the preparations for the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition, which has attracted high levels of interest from industry, academics and the media.

Philips have made considerable progress with the Low Power and Ultra-Low Power radio elements in WPB2. This is supported by development of the mobile hub with work being done on the synchronisation of stored data with the set top box over Bluetooth: algorithms and protocols have been developed following the proposed Bluetooth Medical Profile specification and should make the system Continua Compliant. New Mobile Hub hardware development has begun and set-top box hardware is now in its final version. WPB7 started in June 2007 with preparation for a demo-system for the July 2007 Project Meeting that shows aspects of all parts of the SAPHE system working together.

BT have produced a revised Vision scenario following the March workshop with Liverpool PCT: this focuses on Community Matrons dealing with a ‘typical’ patients with COPD: this has been reinforced through contact with Community Matrons in South East Essex to better understand their role and the potential value of SAPHE. A prototype ZigBee network has been set up: this has usefully revealed a number issues which are being addressed by both BT and Philips.

Work is underway on the technical specification document D07 ‘Service Requirement for large scale deployment’, this will build on the previous documents pre-D07 and SAPHE Data Comms: a first draft of D07 has been circulated in July.

There have been concerns in the previous two quarters relating to the trial site and linkages with Liverpool PCT. During Q5, there have been high level contacts with Liverpool PCT and substantial progress has been made in working out the focus of the trial, recruitment profiles for subjects, and the details of the trial: Andrew Sixsmith, supported by the Imperial BEIC team, has started to lead an activity working with Liverpool Community Matrons to identify typical patient profiles and their current processes in order to determine requirements to steer the SAPHE technical design. This work will continue actively into Q6, with the aim of having the SAPHE trial plan substantially defined by the end of September.




Exceptions

The Docobo situation was reported last month – we believe this is under control, and we anticipate resolution from Q6 onwards.

Overhead rates at both BT and Philips have been revised downwards. This has resulted in a change in the balance of activities between direct labour and overheads in the Spend Profile. This is not anticipated to be a real problem for the project, and the monitoring officer has been alerted and made fully aware of the situation.
