Prelude “Prelude and Fugue in G Major” - J.S. Bach

*Call to Celebrate: (sung) “Enter Into Jerusalem”

  • by Richard Ho Lung, S.J.

Enter into Jerusalem, let us go to God’s house,
With the healthy and the sick,
With the worker and the weak;
Let us go to God’s house.
Enter into Jerusalem, let us go to God’s house,
Come and run with the wind,
With the God who reigns in peace;
Let us go to God’s house.

Chorus:
We go celebrate, we go celebrate,
We go celebrate, O Israel!
Praise the name of the Lord on high,
Praise his name in song!
Praise the Lord, with a heav’nly song,
With a heav’nly song, with a heav’nly song,
Praise the Lord!

Enter into Jerusalem, mek we walk-go-down there,
With the young and the old,
With the little and the large;
Mek we walk-go-down there.
Enter into Jerusalem, mek we walk-go-down there,
Swaying to the breeze,
With the God who reigns in peace;
Mek we walk-go-down there.
Chorus
.
Enter into Jerusalem, let us go to God’s house,
With yu papa and yu mama,
With yu uncle and yu aunt;
Let us go to God’s house.
Enter into Jerusalem, let us go to God’s house,
Run and catch the breeze,
With the God who reigns in peace;
Let us go to God’s house.

We go celebrate, we go celebrate,
We go celebrate, O Israel!
Praise the name of the Lord on high,
Praise his name in song!
Praise the Lord, with a heav’nly song,
With a heav’nly song, with a heav’nly song,
Praise the Lord!

Good News about Jesus: Luke 2:15-19 (unison)

Eugene H. Peterson, The Message [2005]

As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed. Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself.

Response Gentle Woman (unison)
Gentle Woman, Quiet Light,

Morning Star,

So strong and bright.

Gentle Mother, Peaceful Dove,

Teach us Wisdom,

Teach us Love.
You were chosen by the Father,

You were chosen for the Son,

You were chosen from all women,

And for Woman the Shining One.

You were chosen from all women,

And for Woman the Shining One.

“Put Peace Into Each Other’s Hands”

A Prayer for Peace

  • written by Margaret Laurence, adapted into a litany

Leader: May our eyes and hearts be opened to all faiths that praise and protect life.

All: May our lives be committed to honouring and saving life.

Leader: May we struggle all our lives for lives of us all; for all the children,

All: and may we strive with all our lives against destroyers; against wars,

Leader: against those whose distortions have taken, and would take again, beloved children to untimely death.

All: May we oppose those hatreds with every strength and word in all our lives; as long as life shall last,

Leader: and may at last our fears be brave,

All: and may we praise life given; life lived, with hope.

Leader: May our symbols of faith, of caring and respect and love, become one symbol,

All: as our children are our mutual children,

Leader: as the Holy Spirit breathes in us all,

All: and may we learn not to hurt.

Leader: May we lean one upon another,

All: give and receive loving strength,

Leader: and may we learn we are one People in our home Earth.

All: Amen.

*Offertory Response (sung to the tune #420 Voices United)

We bring our gifts, with hope and love and prayers

That all the world would know God's grace and care.

Christ, help us to serve, to give, to laugh, to share.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Departing in Praise

*Hymn #326 “O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing”

*Closing Prayer (unison) #13, Voices United
O God, our deliverer:

you cast down the mighty,

and lift up those of no account;

like Elizabeth and Mary,

who embraced one another

with songs of liberation,

may we, pregnant with your Spirit,

affirm one another in hope for the world;

in the name of Jesus. Amen.
*Benediction

A Peace Light
A group of American Christians visited a number of Russian churches in 1986. Following a service in a Russian Orthodox Church there, an elderly woman placed three rubles in the hand of an American minister from the First Presbyterian Church in York, Pennsylvania and asked him to buy a candle for his church to be lit as a symbol of Peace during each service.

Peace lights have been passed on throughout the world since 1986 – one to Neepawa United Church, Manitoba.

October 22, 1995. Neepawa United Church passed the Peace Light to the congregation of Lakefield United Church.

Thereafter, from Lakefield, the Peace Light has been carried to: Toronto, Ontario Nashville, Tennessee

Paris, Ontario Fonthill, Ontario

Peterborough, Ontario Jordan, Ontario

London, Ontario Owen Sound, Ontario

Sudbury, Ontario Lindsay, Ontario
