The Virginia and North Carolina Chapters of the American Fisheries Society met in Danville, Virginia, on March 15-17, in association with the Atlantic Slope Mollusk Group. The Continuing Education committee showed its stuff Eric Hallerman and Nate Wilke teamed up to offer a short course on conservation genetics. A plenary session on the impacts of the Dan River coal ash spill included Brian Williams (Dan River Basin Association), Linda Hickok and Reid Garrett (Duke Energy), and Jeff DeBerardinis (North Carolina Division of Water Resources). Members of the chapters contributed 62 outstanding podium presentations and 14 posters. The banquet included fundraising raffles benefitting student scholarships. Best student paper awards were presented to Jack Eschenroeder (Georgia Southern University) and Michael Moore (Virginia Tech). The Surber Fisheries Scientist award was presented to Brian Murphy (Virginia Tech) and the Citizen Conservationist award was presented to Mike Ward (Smith Mountain Striper Club). Scholarship awards were presented to Oliver Nettere (undergraduate, Washington and Lee University) and Sasha Doss (graduate, Virginia Tech). Officers include Eric Hallerman (Past-President), Craig Roghair (President), Mike Isel (President-Elect), Dan Goetz (Secretary), and Dan Wilson (Treasurer).
Thanks to Virginia Eagle Distributing, Sweetwater Brewing Company, Three Oaks Engineering, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Duke Energy, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, ETS, Aquatic Biological Monitoring Services LLC, Smith-Root, National Bass Guide Service, John Kauffman LLC, Shenandoah StreamWorks Stream Restoration, Appomattox River Company, and the Freshwater Mussels Conservation Society for funding.
