Overview of Rationale
As many companies increasingly make decisions by applying analytical techniques to large data, there are much more career opportunities for professionals who can obtain business insights from data analysis and translate such insights into timely business decisions. Hence, many MBA Programs have recently added Analytics concentration to their curriculum. In order to enhance the appeal of the PMBA Program and provide more choices to our PMBA students, I would like GPC approve adding new Analytics concentration composed of the following three courses already existing in our MS Business Analytics Program.
Analytics Concentration is designed to be a student-centered concentration in that the program is focused on enhancing student’s analytical skills and guiding them to meaningful and sustainable employment. This is consistent with SMC’s mission to develop the whole person, academically, spiritually, and professionally. The concentration also focuses on teaching students to employ their critical thinking skills to extract meanings from seemingly meaningless sea of data. The concentration will also emphasize clear communication of the findings to various stakeholders. Critical thinking and communication skills are the hallmarks of SMC’s liberal arts tradition.
Courses and Format
Advanced Data Analysis (Every Winter Quarter)
This course is designed to equip students with advanced techniques for data analysis, forecasting and decision-making, applying them through case studies, and projects. It builds on the Data Analysis course. Topics include Logistic Regression, Non-linear Regression, Time Series Analysis, Nonparametric Methods, Bayesian Probability Updating, and Decision Analysis. This course involves extensive use of Excel and an introduction to the statistical software such as R.
Programming for Analytics (Every Spring Quarter)
This course prepares students to build well-designed code modules that follow basic programming concepts and logic flow.  It covers the fundamental concepts of computer programming using a standard programming language such as Python. Topics include data structures, control structures, data input/output, object-oriented programming, exception handling, and debugging. Concepts and methods introduced in the course are illustrated with simple data analysis examples
Data Visualization and Story Telling (Every Summer Quarter)
This course prepares students to create compelling narratives to effectively transmit the results of their analysis.  Students learn various techniques and tools to present analytical results visually, communicate information clearly, and articulate the business insights revealed by analytics effectively. Topics will include data visualization software packages (e.g. Tableau) to present data dynamically, visual querying linked multi-dimensional visualization, dashboards, and action alerts.
Upon approval of GPSEPC, Analytics concentration will be available starting from 2016-2017. Each course will be offered once a year, and the courses will be offered in Hybrid format in which students participate in 2-hour synchronous online sessions every week for 10 weeks, and six 4-hour face-to-face classes on alternate Saturdays. The total contact time is 44 hours, equivalent to all other PMBA courses.
