Teaching Steps

  1. WELCOME

    1. Greet conferees at the door and welcome them to the Missions Deep Sea Dive.

    2. Encourage them to choose a seat and then join a group to start playing the What Is It Playdough Game.

    3. As additional conferees arrive guide them to join a group to play the game.

    4. Gather the conferees back and express how glad you are that they are ready to Dive Deep into Missions this year.

    5. Ask if this is the first year for anyone to be a part of the VBSI training. If so, welcome them and thank them for making this commitment to train others this year.

    6. Tell them the playdough creations they made are part of the Bible Stories and Mission Stories we will be hearing about today. Ask the group how this game could be played with their conferees and also with the children at VBS this year.

    7. Read with the group Psalm 139:23-24. Share your thoughts about this verse and how it can give us hope and encouragement as we prepare to share VBS 2016 with our states, associations and our home church.

    8. Lead a time of prayer for those in attendance and for the states and churches they represent.

  1. DIVE DEEP INTO THE BIBLE STORY

    1. Say: Before we Dive Deep into our Mission Adventures this year, I would like for us to know what the children will be hearing during their Bible Study Rotation. Some children may go to the Mission Rotation before they attend their Bible Study Rotation so teachers need to be able to share a brief summary of the Bible Story with the children each day.

    2. Divide the conferees into five groups. Give each group one of the assignments from Conference Item 2. Ask the groups to work together to discover what the children will be learning each day during their Bible Study Rotation.

    3. Call the groups back together and ask them to share what they discovered.

    4. Ask: What did you notice about the Bible Stories this year? It’s Jesus every day!

    5. Walk toward the DVD/TV set up and begin step 3.

  1. OUR MISSIONARIES ARE SUBMERGED WITH JESUS

    1. Ask if everyone received a handout as they entered the room.

    2. Let’s meet the VBS 2016 Missionaries that share Jesus every day!

    3. Play the Day 1 video for the conferees.

    4. After the video is over share the stories of each family through Day 4.

    5. Have the conferees fill in the blanks as you share their stories.

      1. THE DYE FAMILY

        1. Matt Dye was the pastor at Dallsburg Baptist Church.

        2. His family moved from Wheatley, Kentucky to Atlanta, Georgia.

        3. Matt discovered that millions of people in Atlanta do not know that Jesus is real.

        4. When Matt and his wife Teresa moved to Atlanta they didn’t have a job. They started their own Shaved Ice Truck business.

        5. M-28 is the name of the church the Dye Family started.

        6. Teresa met a mom at a park her name is Tess. She and her family now know about Jesus.

      1. DJ’s FAMILY

        1. DJ’s parents are missionaries in Ontario, Canada.

        2. DJ and his mom will travel to South Asia to visit with his Auntie Helen and Uncle Donald.

        3. DJ’s aunt and uncle spend a lot of time with people living in slums. They tell the people there that Jesus loves them.

        4. There are more than a billion South Asians in the world.

        5. Many South Asians are Hindu and believe in over 300 million gods.

        6. Uncle Donald puts Bible Stories and worship songs on micro SD cards.

    1. Say: Let’s see the rest of their adventures.

    2. Play Day 5 for the group.

    3. Update the group on any new information you may have discovered since the video was made.

  1. PERISCOPE UP TO PLAN EACH DAY

    1. Say: Let’s look through the periscopes to see what the children will be doing to reinforce their mission adventure each day.

    2. On either side of the table you will see two sets of Dive Bags. Each Dive Bag will contain everything you will need for that particular day.

    3. Divide your groups as to how many are in your conference. If you have a small group of 5 of less do all of the Dive Bags together.

    4. If you have 6 to 10 of divide the conferees into two groups. Have each group choose 2 or 3 bags from each missionary family to dive into this year.

    5. If your group is large divide into two groups and have each group divide the 5 Dive Bags for each missionary family between them.

    6. Walk through the groups to see if they need assistance and answer any questions.

    7. Call the groups back together and have each group share briefly what the children will be doing each day.

    8. Ask how the activities can be modified it their rotation time does not allow for all of the activities.

    9. Gather the bags from each group.

    10. Discuss how the Mission Rotation can be modified for churches that are on a condensed schedule.

    11. Walk to the front and get the basket of shells on the Materials Table.

  1. CLOSING

    1. Say: It is time for our Deep Sea Adventure to end. Will you please make a circle around the room?

    2. Begin passing out the shells.

    3. Say: Just as each of these shells are wonderfully unique and fashioned by God, so are each of you. We all have testimonies and stories to tell of how Jesus has changed us and has held us during times when we thought we could not stay afloat. But we are each standing here today because Christ was there to keep us safe and secure in His strong arms.

    4. Say: My prayer for you is that you will rely on Christ as you prepare for VBS this year. May you know His love and that I will be praying for you.

    5. Make your way toward the exit door to close the circle and ask a conferee to close in prayer.

    6. Say goodbye to each conferee and wish them a safe voyage.
