Greg's Broom - "Should be 'H. Broom'. I found a total of seven brooms af the Hunnewell Arb - some now gone - two I couldn't reach with my 40' pole. I spread them around as "H." so no one would raid the place. I did show them to a few others." Greg Williams text.
"Abies nordmanniana 'KBNG WB' - not sure where this name comes from- Hunnewell W.B. - Hunnewell Broom + Abies nordmanniana Broom H are the same- I used Abies nordmanniana Broom H (was) the name I used when I shared the broom with others-" Greg Williams text
Abies nordmanniana 'KBNG W.B.' does have several synonyms like: 'Broom H', W.B. Hunnewell' and 'Hunnewell Broom' Edwin Smits text.
I believe this broom was found at the Hunnewell Estate in Mass. by Greg. He sent me scions over 20 years ago and I have offered it for sale at various times. I wouldn't be surprised if the plants in your collection can be traced back to me as the American source. Greg has explored the Hunnewell Estate in the past and knows the plants and has found a couple of fir brooms there. Bob Fincham text.
A dwarf evergreen conifer with a dense flattened-globe form. Green needles are smaller than the species. An excellent (and easy to grow) rock garden plant. Prefers full sun in well-drained soil. 12" tall x 18" wide in 10 years. Hardy to -30 degrees. USDA zone 4. Buchholz text.
The little green needles of this Nordmann fir appear on short stems and create a charming texture. The miniature to dwarf, slow-growing conifer has a bun-like shape. Growth Rate: 1-3" HxW@10yrs: 1.5'x2'. Brent Markus text.

Bill Jansen of Collector’s Nursery in Battle Ground, Wahsington introduced two variegated seedlings, this one and its sister seedling, ‘Sahara Ice’. It has new spring growth that is white and then variegated through the summer months. During the fall and winter it becomes greyish and has white only on the tips of the twigs, and branches. ‘Sahara Frost’ grows faster than the sister seedling (according to Bill),but from our observation they both grow rapidly and it will evidently become a tree. Bill Janssen of Collector’s Nursery in Battle Ground, Washington introduced two variegated seedlings. This seedling, named ‘Sahara Ice’ is said to grow much slower than its sister seedling, ‘Sahara Frost’. They both have white variegated foliage following the annual spring growth, which then becomes greyish in the fall and winter, with white terminals. It is our experience that both seedlings seem to grow to trees, neither being more dwarf than the other. This was confirmed to me by Bill Jannsen during a visit to his nursery in the Fall of 2006. Cephalotaxus harringtonia ‘Mary Fleming’ is a spreading bush-form of Japanese Plum-yew with rich, dark green recurved needles. Typical rate of growth in most areas is 4 to 6 inches (10 – 15 cm) per year resulting in a mounding shrub 4 to 6 feet (1.2 – 1.8 m) tall and wide after 10 years in the landscape. Like many other Plum-yew cultivars, this is an excellent choice for planting in the understory of a woodland garden.
Yucca Do Nursery of Giddings, Texas is credited with introduction of this cultivar in the early 1980s. It actually has a very interested provenance. C. harrringtonia ‘Mary Fleming’ was selected from a batch of seedlings grown in New York state by Mary Fleming, mother of Texas nurseryman, Will Fleming. Will gave the seedlings to John Fairey of Peckerwood Gardens, Hempstead, Texas for planting and evaluation. Years later, John noted that one of the seedlings was quite distinctive with under-curled needles. He and John Schoenfeld, owner of Yucca Do, decided that it was worthy of propagation, so it went into production at Yucca-do and was named for the plant’s originator.
Note that the Dawes arboretum lists ‘Yucca Do Curls’ as a synonym for this cultivar. Yucca Do denies ever using this as a provisional name. Most likely the confusion resulted from a lost plant tag. Despite it’s unique look, ‘Mary Fleming’ is a very hard plant to locate in the nursery trade. ACS text.

Dwarf Hinoki 'Bess' bears graceful green fans of tightly clustered, upright foliage. The slender columnar stature of 'Bess' fits in a tighter space than 'Nana Gracilis,' which it otherwise resembles. This compact selection is named for the wife of Joe Reis of Long Island, New York, whose extensive work with Chamaecyparis obtusa cultivars created several superior selections. An excellent choice for rock garden, large container or narrow garden site. Iseli.

Larry Stanley of Stanley & Son’s Nursery in Boring, Oregon selected this dwarf bun of variegated foliage. It was found as a witch’s broom on Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Snowflake’. It has greyish-green juvenile foliage, flecked with creamy-white bits of adult foliage. It is too soon to fully evaluate this plant as it is only recently been discovered and introduced. It appears that it will be globular and quite dwarf. Howse text.

This plant is soft in form as well as texture. Tiers of feathery downy-looking foliage on an upright broad habit give a "warm fuzzy" feeling to the garden. Typical obtusa juvenile growth is a muted blue. With age, however, adult foliage begins to appear at the ends of the branches. This piece of art deserves a prominent place in the landscape. It is tight and columnar, with dense dark green foliage, having an appearance as though it were carved from green stone. The original seedling is now about 5 feet tall, in about 15 years, and about 1 foot wide with an attractive irregular habit. Howse text.

Sculptural, superfine, and fun. This charming miniature Hinoki is an appropriate namesake for dwarf conifer pioneer Jean Iseli. Its tightly pressed fans of foliage swirl and dance into an elegant upright sculpture that packs big impact into a tiny package. The refined, true green foliage and measured growth pay tribute to the character and vision of the early conifer aficionado. This selection, named in memory of Iseli by John Oliver, originated from 'Nana Gracilis' seed given to Oliver Nursery in 1981. Iseli text.

This remarkable little Hinoki, selected from amoung thousands of seedlings of Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' in 1981, is the best of the best. Compact sprays of dense, finely textured foliage decorate the branches of the low, rounded, spreading plants. Such tight foliage is usually associated with miniature selections that have extremely slow growth, but this superior cultivar grows comparatively faster. It will reach the size of a beach ball within years instead of decades. Ultimately wider than tall, 'Just Dandy' contributes unparalleled grace and beauty to small spaces throughout the year. A dwarf, dense conifer featuring twisted, turning thread-like golden foliage. At times the branchlets end with a small fasciation. Very curious but easy to grow and tolerates heat well. Prefers sun/partial shade in well-drained soil. 4' tall x 4' wide in 10 years. Hardy to -30 degrees. USDA zone 4. Discovered and introduced by the Flora Wonder(tm) Collection of Buchholz Nursery. Buchholz text.
You gotta love 'Lemon Twist', Its unusual, kinky foliage displays zesty yellow tips, producing a striking effect against the red bark of the stems. Some of the short, twisted branch tips become cristate, eventually developing flattened, curved cockscombs that spiral back on themselves. The somewhat open, rounded form grows as wide as tall. This colorful sport of 'Tsatsumi' was selected at Bucholz & Bucholz in Gaston, Oregon. Prefers moist, well-drained soil with afternoon shade in the summer. Iseli text.

The outstanding character of this irregular, upright Hinoki cultivar comes from a combination of foliage types. Some of it is tight sprays of congested, twisting fans that cup gracefully downward, and some of it is longer, more open shoots with red stems that reach up and out. Bronze winter tones add seasonal interest to this jolly fellow from Robin Hood's Merry Men. Iseli text.
