It was a sad day in 1992 when we discovered this broom has been destroyed. It always produced a great crop of new seeds. R. 2006 Chub Harper in ACS database 1986 Randy Dykstra IL USA as ’Lanark’ WB seedling 2006 Arrowhead Alpines, Fowlerville, MI USA listed this plant as 'WB' before the name was changed to 'Pretty Carole'. 1993 - Chub Harper, Moline, IL gave a witches' broom seedling from Larix decidua 'Lanark' to Dennis Groh of Dearborn Heights, MI. After growing this in his garden Mr. Groh recognized this plant as a superior very dwarf selection of this species. Over time it has been grafted and these plants have been distributed to other collectors and nurseries so you can find this plant listed in many conifer catalogs. The plant was originally referred to as 'Dennis Groh' and can be found listed under that name. In 2006 it was renamed to 'Pretty Carole' in honor of Dennis Groh's wife. The plant itself echos it's namesake. It makes an excellent small garden plant and one that stays in scale with the surroundings. Low mounding dwarf form with delicate light green foilage. ACS text.

Its needles and branchlets are quite typical of the species including its deciduous nature. The overall form of the plant is very dense and globose. Bill Journeay discovered a Larix laricina witches broom along the highway in Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada . This mutation on a wild tree provided that propagation material that became ‘Northern Torch’. The broom is on relatively young tree growing in the open and is very dense and appears to be fast growing. As is true with many Larix cultivars, ‘Northern Torch’ is easily propagated through grafting. Bill believes it will be a very interesting cultivar when grafted high on a standard. He says further that its initial form said Torch to him the moment he first saw it. It has been propagated by grafting at a local nursery in New Brunswick, Canada and will soon be included in the conifer collection at Kingsbrae Gardens, St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada.
