JPN selection

Metasequoia glyptostroboides ‘Ogon’

Commonly known by the trade name M. g. 'Gold Rush' Index# 999986. Originated in Japan. The word "ogon" is reported to translate to "gold bullion" or "gold coin". With this definition the name 'Ogon' will be a valid cultivar name. ACS text.

Intense, golden-yellow, feathery foliage makes this striking, new cultivar easily recognizable. 'Gold Rush' is deciduous and has the same handsome habit and horizontal branches as the species. Full sun produces best color, though partial shade is recommended in warmer summer climates. Known in Japan as 'Ogon', the tree was renamed by Dutch nurseryman Pieter Zwijnenburg Jr. before its introduction into European markets in 1993. Iseli text.

‘Gold Rush’ (Royal Horticultural Society Plant Finder [RHSPF], 2004): This recent cultivar comes from Japan and possesses yellow foliage. It is recognized under different names such as ‘Golden Oji’, ‘Golden Mantle’ and ‘Ogon’. It roots well, but dry soil conditions sometimes cause the leaves to burn. This tree was introduced in Europe by P. Zwijnenburg Nurseries, Boskoop, The Netherlands in 1993 and commercialized in 1997-1998. Its growth was 6 m over 10 years. It comes from irradiated seedlot by X-ray (in 1974). The original tree was planted in 1977 at the Kameyama breeding station, Institute for forest Tree Improvement, New Oji paper co., Ltd, Mie, Japan. This cultivar is mentioned in the US Patent & Trademark Office Website. Christophe Nugue text.

1923 Parsons Nurs. NY USA

Picea abies ‘Gregoryana Parsonsii’

An irregular, dwarfed alpine shape makes this selection the perfect rock garden specimen. It sports relatively thick, green needles, tan stems and bright brown buds. Longer, flatter needles and a slightly more open habit distinguish 'Gregoryana Parsonsii' from 'Gregoryana'. Iseli text.

This is similar to 'Gregoriana but tends to be a bit more loose and

straggly, introduced by Parson’s nursery in NY back in 1927.

Iseli Nursery USA

The late Gary Lanham found this unusual, boldly textured, compact Norway Spruce in 1994 in Kentucky, a witch's broom nearly 10' up in a mature Picea abies. Intrigued by the interesting beehive form, Gary took it to Klein's Nursery in Louisville, and from there, it made its way to Iseli Nursery. The needles of 'Lanham's Beehive' are longer and thicker than other dwarf cultivars and they have a slight glaucous tint. These features, combined with prominent, cinnamon-colored stems and buds, create a dramatic effect. Iseli text.

A narrow form with dark green needles. The central leader can put on 2' of growth in one year once established. Similar, but a great improvement over 'Hillside Upright.' By comparison, 'Middle Finger' has side branches that are not just stubs, they grow about half as quickly as the leader, thereby developing a more uniform open columnar form. The side branches have a dominant central bud, which is held upright, hence the name 'Middle Finger.' A chance seedlings Norway spruce found along a highway by Richard Haslebacher of Woods Creek Horticultural, Silverton, OR. Brent Markus text.

The name of this miniature spruce was given by Rare Tree Nursery in 2013. Found as a witch's broom by Joe Stupka on the common 'Nidiformis'. The name both acknowledges that it is a globe to egg-shaped broom that was found in a bird's-nest spruce, as well as that these are a slow way to build a "nest egg" in the financial sense because they grow so slow. Site this narrow, pyramidal tree where its strongly ascending branches can develop into a mid-size, distinctly upright cone in the landscape. In addition to size and shape, the cultivar produces many soft-brown shoots and clean-green needles. Use it as a specimen in a small space that deserves a big impact or use it as part of a privacy wall. Another great selection from nurseryman Andy Sherwood of Oregon. Iseli text.
