4.5 (F) Chevron’s manipulation of NGO based projects and programs: With a view to develop the people’s lives of the local area, Chevron has sponsored and in some cases manipulated NGOs for economic development in the area.
Throughout different portion of the time, Chevron has affiliated with ngos for directing a number of programs and projects.
Among all of them, some notable projects are describing below.
Jibika: This project was launched in 2015 by BRAC. The aim of this project is promote entrepreneurship for sustainable income growth of poor and marginalized farming households. Chevron has contracted with BRAC for implementing the projects among the people living around gas fields operated by Chevron. More than 2000 micro-enterpreneurs have gained improved access to finance, farming technology and extension support through his project. Furthermore, it has trained up almost 4000s trainee on the issue of leadership and enterprise development.
Uttoron: sponsored by Asian Development Bank, Bangladesh skill’s for Employment Investment program launched this project in 2015. Chevron has signed an mou with the respective authorities for implementing the projects in the adjacent area of Chevron operated gas fields. The aim of this project was to enable 1400 community youths to access high-quality training in light engineering, construction and ready-made garment sectors. Phase-1 of this project closed in july 2019. After the expiration of the phase-1 of the project, in December 2019, further 2000 community youths have been targeted for the next 3 years. Moreover, the projects aim to establish a skill training center near Bibiyana gas field. Whatsoever, this project aims to upgrade a national training institute to offer advanced training course on welding and the project also playing its role as a network between employee and employer.
English for business success: under the same mou with ADB, a 15 months project entitled “English for Business Success” has launched by Chevron. The program launched in 2018 and was provided by British Council. Through this project, 3000 trainees received English language communication skills training. The age limit of the trainees is between 18 and 40. Furthermore, Bangladesh Association of Call Center and Outsourcing has collaborated a curriculum with British Council. Eventually, the project has delivered its training from 13 call-centers nationwide.
