Today you will make your way by taxi. This will preserve your independence so you will be free to take as much time as you want at each stop, include a lunch break overlooking the former harbor at Arromanches, and pause for drinks at Omaha beach.
Beginning in Bayeux, you will travel northeast to Arromanches, the location of Port Winston, the temporary harbor built and used for the landings on the Normandy coast. The second leg of your drive will take you west along the coast to Saint Laurant sur Mer, scene of the Omaha Beach landing. The final leg of today’s circuit will bring you back home to Bayeux.
This first leg of taxi rides will take 15 minutes, a distance of just over 6 miles, and will cost around €25 (about $28). The second leg, from Arromanches to the American
Cemetery & Memorial overlooking Omaha Beach, will take around 45 minutes, a distance of 14 miles, and will cost about €35 ($39). Your third and final leg, from Omaha Beach back to Bayeux, will take about 30 minutes, a distance of just over 12 miles, and will cost around €40 ($45). Planning ahead for your day’s transportation, figure on a total cost of around €100 ($112) to complete the full loop. Be sure to carry enough cash with you to pay your drivers.
If €100 seems steep for a single day trip, consider that a full-day group tour to the D-Day Beaches from Bayeux, would cost around €100 ($112) per person. So by sharing a series of taxis, your total cost for two will be cut in half, and you will save €100 (or more).
Also, if you book a group tour, you will need to lock in your reservations well in advance of your trip, and make full payment at the time of booking. This can become even more of a problem if you later need to make changes. Generally you will not be entitled to a refund for cancellations made within one week of the tour.
Programmed group tours to the beaches generally include visits to several landing locations. This means that the time allotted to each stop is extremely limited. And most tours do not include a visit to Arromanches, one of the essential sights of your day. Also, if you opt for a programmed tour, you will be bound by a prescribed schedule, and will not have the latitude to lunch overlooking the sea, or walk along the beach looking back up at the cliffs. You will spend your day with scant time to take in each stop before you head back to the bus or van to meet your group.
If, despite these sacrifices to your full experience, you still would prefer to exchange your freedom for a full-day guided group tour, one option is Bayeux Shuttle (http://www.bayeuxshuttle.com).
Otherwise, call a taxi and set off, first to Arromanche.
