Staff Sergeant Scott Rodrique, of Auburn, who has returned home after 14 months of active duty with the 133rd Engineer Combat Battalion, Headquarters Support Company stationed in Iraq. While in Iraq, the 133rd Headquarters Support Company provided specialty support to the battalion's subordinate units, which include battalion staff, the command headquarters and a direct support maintenance platoon plus an equipment platoon. Joseph P. "Joe" White, of Ellsworth, a longtime educator and school administrator. Mr. White was a graduate of the University of Maine, where he received a bachelor's degree in education, a master's degree in educational administration and a C.A.S. in educational administration. He was principal at the S. S. Nash School in Addison; he served as headmaster at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Hampden Academy in Hampden and Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft; and he was principal at Hancock Grammar School in Hancock. Mr. White then went on to serve as Assistant Superintendent of schools for the City of Ellsworth, after which he served as Superintendent for MSAD #37 in Washington County for 15 years, the position from which he retired. During his retirement, he continued to be interim teacher, principal and superintendent in many Hancock County and Washington County schools. We acknowledge his long and distinguished career in education and his dedication to the students and communities he served. Chief Warrant Officer Mark Bragdon, of Windham, who has returned home after 14 months of active duty with the 112th Medical Company stationed in Iraq. While in Iraq, the 112th provided medical evacuation of injured service members. With selfless devotion and dedication to the mission, the 112th flew into hostile combat conditions to evacuate critically wounded comrades. Frank Douglas Jones, of Baileyville, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Jones joined the United States Army in 1945 and was stationed in Panama with the Military Police. He worked for St. Croix Paper Company, later Georgia Pacific, for 44 years. Mr. Jones was extremely committed to his community. He served on the Baileyville Town Council for 42 years and served as its chair for 20 years. He was also involved in many other civic organizations. The epitome of a "town father," he will be remembered as a leader in town politics, always approachable, considerate and polite and a gentlemen in the truest meaning of the word. His keen sense of humor was one of his most renowned qualities. He was also deeply devoted to his wife Jennie, their 5 children, 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. We join his family and many friends in celebrating the life of this outstanding citizen who will be sadly missed by all who knew him; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 554)

Maxine "Macky" B. King, of Topsham, on the occasion of her 90th birthday, April 22, 2005. Ms. King has 2 sons, 4 grandchildren and one great-grandson. She grew up in New York City and spent her summers at Fernwood Camp in Poland, an all girl's camp founded by her father. After her father's death, Macky took over running the camp until it was sold. She still spends summers at her cottage at Fernwood. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to her on this special occasion; (HLS 558)

Anna Schwarcz, of Orrington, who is the recipient of a President's Volunteer Service Award sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The award recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities. Volunteer activities are judged on personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth. Ms. Schwarcz has trained, cared for and groomed dogs to serve as companions for the disabled. Ellsworth High School, for presenting the "Every 15 Minutes" Alcohol Awareness Program to the juniors and seniors of the school. This program is a 2-day community event that illustrates that every 15 minutes across the United States someone dies as a result of a highway accident involving alcohol. It is an intense and emotional program that shows students the impact that an alcohol-related fatality has on family, friends, schools and the community. "Every 15 Minutes" offers real-life experience without the real-life risk, as it focuses on the potentially dangerous consequences of drinking alcohol. This is the second time that Ellsworth High School has sponsored this event, which includes participation from the Ellsworth police and fire departments, the local hospital, video production crew, community officials, the District Attorney's Office and a cross-section of the community at large. Norman Gould, of Wilton, recipient of the Community Service Award sponsored by the Franklin Grange #50. Mr. Gould has been a selectman for the Town of Wilton for 37 years and has been elected to serve another 3-year term. He has also served on the Wilton Planning Board for 27 years. Elva Lillian (Hayes) Miller, of Oakland, on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Mrs. Miller was born on April 22, 1905 in South Boston, Massachusetts. Following her first job in a factory, she went to work at F.W. Woolworth Company for the next 46 years in various capacities, including sales clerk, bookkeeper, manager and buyer. An avid seamstress, Mrs. Miller has always made her own patterns and is well-known for her handmade dolls, her quick wit and sharp memory. We extend to Mrs. Miller our congratulations and best wishes for continued health and happiness; (HLS 564)

Mark Johnston, of Winthrop, who was named the 2005 Outstanding Citizen of the Year by Le Club Calumet for his long-standing commitment to public service. Mr. Johnston, president and chief executive officer of Kennebec Savings Bank, is a former Augusta resident and is director and treasurer of Camp KV for Kids, director and treasurer of the Elsie and William Viles Foundation, director and executive committee member of the Augusta Board of Trade, trustee of Thomas College, 2004 campaign chair of the United Way of Kennebec Valley, board member of the Friends of Cobbossee Watershed District and trustee of the Augusta Scholarship Foundation. Robert Pettengill, of Old Orchard Beach, a longtime member of the VFW Post 7997, who was recently appointed National Deputy Chief of Staff of the VFW. Mr. Pettengill has been a member of the VFW for 46 years, and has been a commander for 24 years. He served with honor during the Korean War, as part of the Inchon invasion.
