Cooper, Dept of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, United States Government to invite him to join the User Group and obtain his expertise in the use of IBIS (Forensic Technology) in USA. Event No: 12 Title Visit to Papillon Systems in Russia Date (month, year) May 2009 Location Miass, Russian Federation Type Meetings and Inspection of Technology Organizer FPL Objective Dissemination of project and to assess the Arsenal systems developed and manufactured by Papillon Systems Description Jenny Thomas and Richard Leary from FPL travelled to Miass, Russia to the headquarters of Papillon Systems. This company have developed a system that captured digital images of bullets and cartridge cases, stores them in a database and then undertakes correlations. We had a detailed look at the system and had the chance to ask in depth questions about the way the system works and performs. We had a meeting with senior management at Papillon Systems to discuss collaboration between Odyssey and Papillon Systems. As a result of this visit, Papillon System agreed to supply a ballistics scanner to the project for research and development. They also agreed to assist in taking data from their system and making it available to the Odyssey platform. Papillon also supplied a test set of images to the project and wrote some custom code to extract meta-data from these images. Event No: 13 Title STRAW workshop Date (month, year) June 2009 Location Rome, Italy Type Conference / Workshop Organizer Fondazione Rosselli, Italy Objective Dissemination Description The Straw project is another EU funded FP7 Project that aims at providing a technology watch for Organisations involved in defence and security. The aim of the workshop was to bring together the defence and security industry with technology suppliers to enhance cooperation and provide information about new products and developments. Jenny Thomas presented the Odyssey project, explained the aims and objectives and took questions from the audience. Target audience End Users Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited Status Completed Event No: 14 Title Visit and Presentation to NABIS Date (month, year) July 2009 Location London, UK Type Meeting Organizer FPL Objective Research Description Jenny Thomas and Richard Leary visited the London NABIS Hub to look at the IBIS Trax equipment and talk to staff about their work practises. Target audience End Users Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited Status Completed Event No: 15 Title Meeting with Mark Mastaglio, FSS Date (month, year) July 2009 Location London, UK Type Meeting Organizer Forensic Pathways Objective Research and Collaboration Description Jenny Thomas and Richard Leary met with Mark Mastaglio who is the Lead Ballistics Scientist for the Forensic Science Service (FSS). The aim of the meeting was to discuss research that we are planning to undertake and potential collaboration with the FSS. In particular, the areas explored were the FSS providing Odyssey with test fired bullets and cartridge cases, providing expertise to the project and providing access to laboratory facilities. Event No: 16 Title Meeting with FSS Date (month, year) August 2009 Location Birmingham, UK Type Meeting Organizer Forensic Pathways Limited Objective Research and Collaboration Description This meeting followed on from the previous meeting with Mark Mastaglio. The meeting was between Jenny Thomas, Richard Leary and the persons responsible for R&D and Intellectual Property at the FSS. The discussion was to explore the business side of any potential collaboration. An agreement was not reached on collaboration. Target audience Ballistics Practioners. Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited Status Completed Event No: 17 Title Meeting with Chair of ENFSI Firearms Working Group Dr Walter Wenz. Date (month, year) August 2009 Location Wiesbaden, Germany Type Meeting Organizer Forensic Pathways Objective Dissemination Description The aim of the meeting was to provide Dr Wenz with an update on the progress of the project and to outline the research that will be undertaken. As a result of this meeting, Dr Wenz agreed to collaborate on the research and to involve ENFSI members. There will now be a dedicated laboratory installed in the BKA in Germany for the purposes of research for Odyssey. Dr Wenz also invited the Odyssey project to present at the annual ENFSI Firearms Working Group Meeting in October, 2009. Target audience End Users Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited and Sheffield Hallam University Status Completed Event No: 18 Title Presentation to ENFSI Firearms Working Group Steering Committee Date (month, year) September, 2009 Location Wiesbaden, Germany Type Presentation Organizer Forensic Pathways Limited Objective Dissemination and Collaboration Description Jenny Thomas presented the Odyssey project planned research to the ENFSI Firearms Working Group Steering Committee so that they became fully informed. The end result was that the Steering Committee agreed to support the research and provide equipment. They also supported the previous decision by Dr Wenz to invite Odyssey to present at the ENFSI FWG meeting in Wiesbaden in October, 2009. Target audience End Users Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited Status Completed Event No: 19 Title European Academy of Forensic Science Conference 2009 Date (month, year) September, 2009 Location Glasgow, Scotland Type Conference Organizer ENFSI Objective Dissemination Description Jenny Thomas presented a paper titled “Improving Accuracy and Efficacy of Forensic Ballistics Analysis and Technology.” The paper outlined some of the research been undertaken as part of the Odyssey Project. Target audience End Users Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited Status Completed Event No: 20 Title Training with Arsenal Date (month, year) September, 2009 Location Miass, Russian Federation Type Training Organizer Forensic Pathways and Papillon Systems Objective Training Description Jenny Thomas travelled to Miass, Russia to be trained on the Arsenal ballistics system. She completed the training course and can now use the system. Status Completed Event No: 22 Title Criminal Justice PhD Conference Date (month, year) October, 2009 Location Birmingham, UK Type Conference Organizer University of Birmingham Objective Dissemination Description Jenny Thomas will present the Odyssey research that she intends to conduct at this conference. The conference is for students undertaking research in the criminal justice arena. Target audience Researchers Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited Status Planned Event No: 23 Title ENFSI Firearms Working Group Annual Conference Date (month, year) October, 2009 Location Wiesbaden, Germany Type Conference Organizer ENFSI Objective Dissemination and Collaboration Description Jenny Thomas and Richard Leary will present the Odyssey Project and planned research at this conference. They will present the aims, objectives and progress so far of the Odyssey Project. Jenny Thomas will present the research plan to the technology manufacturers and ask them to collaboration with the research and the Odyssey Project. Target audience End Users and Manufacturers Partners involved Forensic Pathways Limited Status Planned Event No: 24 Title Improving Ballistics Data Sharing Conference Date (month, year) February 2010 Location Brussels Type Conference Organizer Presidency of the EU. Objective Dissemination Description Odyssey was invited by the current President of the European Union to assist the Spanish Presidency in gaining a greater understanding of how the treaty of PRUM can be facilitated in terms of crime and ballistics data sharing. FPL on behalf of Odyssey attended a meeting of the Spanish Presidency at the European Commission attended by all member states with their respective ministries of the interior or equivalent ministerial body responsible for law, order and security. Target audience All EU member states, Head of Ministries along with Police and Law Enforcement representatives. The meeting was chaired by the Spanish Presidency. Partners involved FPL Status Completed Event No: 25 Title Europol Homicide Working Group Conference/Meeting Date (month, year) February 2010 Location Oslo, Norway Type Conference / Meeting Organizer Europol Objective Dissemination Description FPL attended by invitation of the chair of the EHWG namely Commander Simon Foy, Serious Crime Directorate, New Scotland Yard. FPL presented an overview of the Odyssey Project to new members, a current position presentation of the project and an outline of future aims and objectives. Various dissemination activities and discussions took place with representatives of each EU member state. Target audience Heads of Law Enforcement responsible for Homicide and Serious Crime across all EU member states as well as end users. Partners involved FPL Status Completed Event No: 26 Title Forensic Pathways Limited Open Day Date (month, year) February 2010 Location Tamworth Type Open Day Organizer Forensic Pathways Objective Dissemination Description As part of the Open Day held and organised by Forensic Pathways, a presentation was given to all attendees about the Odyssey Project. Target audience End Users Partners involved FPL Status Completed Event No: 27 Title Launch Day of the Huddersfield University Applied Criminology and Forensic Science Centre Conference Date (month, year) March 2010 Location Leeds Type Conference Organizer University of Huddersfield Objective Dissemination Description This event launched the University of Huddersfield’s Applied Criminology and Forensic Science Centre chaired by Nick Ross. It was attended by academics and End Users in the Criminology and Forensic field. Some of the research being conducted as part of the Odyssey Project was presented. Target audience Academics, End Users Partners involved FPL Status Completed Event No: 28 Title EuroForensics Conference Date (month, year) May 2010 Location Istanbul, Turkey Type Conference Organizer EuroForensics. Objective Dissemination Description On behalf of the Odyssey Project, FPL undertook various dissemination activities and meetings with Law Enforcement and Industrial Experts in the European Forensics field. Target audience Law Enforcement and the Forensic Industry in general and research and development departments in Turkish Universities. Meetings were arranged with Turkish Law Enforcement and the head of the Pakistani delegation responsible for extending Forensic expertise from the EU member states (knowledge transfer) to Pakistan to help fight serious organised crime and terrorism. Partners involved FPL Status Completed Event No: 29 Title Speaker’s Dinner for Forensic Science Society’s Firearms Day Date (month, year) June 2010 Location Leeds Type Speakers Dinner Organizer Forensic Science Society / FPL Objective Dissemination Description FPL sponsored the Dinner held for speakers the evening prior to the event. Richard Leary of Forensic Pathways also delivered a pre dinner speech that discussed the Odyssey Project. The workshop discussed how ballistics evidence and investigations using this evidence will change after the Odyssey Project is completed.
