STEP – BY – STEP SELF – BREAST EXAM

Things you should know:

  • Perform the self breast exam at the same time each month – preferably after your period

  • Continue the monthly exams throughout your life

  • DON’T WORRY – Breast tissue MAY feel lumpy, and this MAY be normal

  • If you note any changes, notify a health care professional immediately

  • MOST BREAST MASSES ARE BENIGN


INSTRUCTIONS

  1. With hands at your sides, sit or stand in front of a mirror to inspect the breast




  1. Place hands on hips and press down

  • Note any dimpling, retraction, asymmetry, bulging veins, masses




  1. While sitting or standing - Extend hands above head

  • Note any dimpling, retraction, asymmetry, bulging veins, masses




  1. Inspect nipples for discharge, scaling, erythema, or inversion
