3.4 SAMPLING TECHINQUE
This research used the multi-stage Probability Sampling technique, so that every member in the population had equal chance to be selected to represent the whole. Specific indication on the characteristics sample member of the population should possess was spelt out, such as their school type (private or public), class category (junior secondary), and age (between 9 and 15).
Most surveys or inquiries that are similar to this study as identified in the review of relevant literature made use of this type of sampling method, and it became imperative to apply the similar technique to this research.
The effectiveness of the probability sampling technique required a sample size to be named. This research worked with an estimate of 300 children from selected junior secondary school in Lagos State. This figure was arrived at using a sample size calculator, with a confidence interval of 8, and a confidence level of 90%. (See: http://www.surveysystem.com/sscalc.htm). Also to cover attrition, the sample size of the population was approximated to 320 children. All that was needed in the end was 25 students each from 6 selected junior secondary public schools, and another 25 each from 6 selected junior secondary private schools to give us our 300 sample size.
A breakdown of the multistage sampling technique which resulted to the sample size, required the interchanging use of probability sampling types to get the sample size of 300 children, namely: systematic random sampling, simple random sampling, stratified sampling or cluster sampling.
First, the children in the state were clustered into the 3 senatorial districts in operation as federal administrations; that is, the Lagos West, East, and Central senatorial districts. Aside the Lagos West Senatorial District which has 10 official Local governments, the other two have 5 each. Due to this and to ensure there is equality in choosing the sample subjects, a systematic sampling was used to pick every 5th local government after all local governments are put together (without being arranged in any format) from each senatorial district.
So with this composition, the choices followed thus: in Lagos Central senatorial district, of Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Apapa, Eti-Osa, and Surulere; in Lagos East senatorial district, of Shomolu, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Ikorodu, and Kosofe; and in Lagos West, of Agege, Ifako-Ijaye, Alimosho, Ojo, Badagry, Ajeromi/Ifelodun, Amuwo-Odofin, Oshodi/Isolo, Mushin, and Ikeja.
